Guys my blood sugar is rising again this eve. No amount of bolus seems to be helping and it's rising rapidly.

Also I'm getting burning and pins and needles in my feet. Will this go away or is it here to stay? My BG has been high for about a week

I changed my cartridge. It's coming down now. Hopefully it won't go back up again. Thanks.

What about my feet? Do u think the burny tingly feeling will go?

Meant to add, the burning feet might be because your bloods are high and will most likely go away when you get back under control.

Thank you. I hope so. Not a nice feeling. Although at least they don't feel cold

Wow I injected about 6x extra units tonight (a lot of me as ratio 1:23), and nothing happened. Changed cartridge and put in 2 and it's plunging!

Well thinking about it, this problem started a few days to a week ago, right around the time i swapped my cartridge!

It's possible that the insulin that didn't appear to work is now doing something - best to keep an eye on things. How are your injection sites?

There's your problem Emmotha :)

Insulin can spoil when exposed to extreme heat and freezing temperatures, in some incidences it may not have been stored correctly by the pharmacy or the company that supplies them, it has been known before.

Tbh, it's not that often you get a bad batch of insulin cartridges so try not to worry.

That gives you another course of action in the future Emmotha. If you feel the insulin isn't working you can always change the cartridge sooner.

Hi. Make sure when you pickup your insulin from the pharmacy that they go and get it from the fridge and that it's cold. Store it below 8 deg C. I checked my fridge with a thermometer and it was set too high. Use the cartirdge with the period the leaflet says normally 4 weeks and sometimes 6 weeks. Don't store it too hot when in the pen.

Thanks all. Where do you buy a thermometer for ur fridge?

Hi emmotha,

If you're still on small doses an your cartridges last you the full month, consider chucking them out and changing them at 2 to 3 weeks instead. My Apidra is a devil for losing potency when it's been in the pen a little while. I actually carry it around in a FRIO bag permanently now - my office is very hot and I can't take the chance. I try to remember to change it at no more than 20 days. It says 28 days on the box, but I think established Type 1s rarely have their insulin on the go that long - LADAs and honeymoon Type 1s do, so there is more chance of us hitting this problem.

Poor you. Also bear in mind any time lag effect - you might get a knock on effect after two or three days. If it was bad insulin you won't - but keep your anti-hypo supplies with you.

Hi Smidge, I didn't used to carry around for a month in a cartridge, however, with the low carbing I've been doing, it had been lasting a lot longer. In the first month I noticed that Novorapid seems to go off after two weeks, so I now limit penfills to that. It's about half a cartridge for me. Lantus phials seem to have a life outside the fridge of 22 days, then have a rapid drop off in efficiency. Used from the fridge they easily last a month or more.

Thanks Tim. It's really reassuring to hear you say that about Novo. I was actually feeling like it's only me having this issue with the Apidra. Levemir seems to last around 20days before a noticeable decline, but Apidra is a complete nightmare - generally 15 to 16 days and I'm having to increase doses and give it a longer and longer head start. Start a new cartridge and I drop low for a couple of days.

Smidge.
