Really well done. My parents both gave up smoking about 12 years ago after 40 plus years of smoking so it can be done. I think having tackled one addiction ( and I do think carbs are just that) , you will cope admirably with this next battle - you seem very determined and also willing to ask for and take on board advice so good on you. All the best .

Thanks CE :)

Mike

try this..when you in-hail into the lungs, focus on the throat and what it feels like, take another drag and another in repetition, after 6, when you have smoke in your lungs, coff
start again with focus on your throat..if you can finish the cigarette like that, I'll give you a $100

Prefer cold turkey :) Thanks Jack !

Inspiring posts especially for new members to read and have some hope that they will regain control
You have worked so hard at this Mike and are a such a nice guy to boot.
Raising my glass to you x
Thanks Alliebee ... you're too kind :) My very best to you always :)

What an inspiration you are Mike. I am totally thrilled for you, but it is you that did all the hard work. All we did was preach (and in my case not necessarily practice what I preach). A huge clap from me, plus a gold star and a gold medal. Just relax in your mind now, and have a wonderful Christmas.

Thanks bluetit :)

Your good wishes are deeply appreciated .... and I mean that most sincerely. Goes for all the other members here as well :)

One thing I didn't ask him is why I'm still on cholesterol tablets ..... ohh well, next time :)

Mike
why would you want to get off them? there are lots of reasons to take a low dose statin

http://cpr.sagepub.com/content/21/4/464.full.pdf
Results: Among 14 primary prevention trials (46,262 participants),
statin therapy increased diabetes by absolute risk of 0.5% (95% CI 0.1–1%, p¼0.012),
meanwhile reducing death by a similar extent: 0.5% (0.9 to 0.2%, p¼0.003).
In the 15 secondary prevention RCTs (37,618 participants), statins decreased death by 1.4% (2.1 to 0.7%, p<0.001).
There were no other statin-attributable symptoms,
although asymptomatic liver transaminase elevation was 0.4% more frequent with statins across all trials. Serious adverse events and withdrawals were similar in both arms.

Conclusions:
Only a small minority of symptoms reported on statins are genuinely due to the statins:
almost all would occur just as frequently on placebo.

Only development of new-onset diabetes mellitus was significantly higher on statins than placebo; nevertheless only 1 in 5 of new cases were actually caused by statins. Higher statin doses produce a detectable effect, but even still the proportion attributable to statins is variable: for asymptomatic liver enzyme elevation, the majority are attributable to the higher dose; in contrast for muscle aches, the majority are not.

this study looked at the history of 60,000 Diabetics after av. 2.7

retinopathy HR=0.6 [decrease of risk]

neuropathy HR=0.66

gangrene of the foot HR=0.88

diabetic nephropathy HR=0.97

[neutral..........HR=1.0 ]

diabetes HR=1·17 [increase of risk]

Well that settles that ... shows my ignorance ... didn't even know it was a statin Jack:confused:

I withdraw the question your worship :)

Hi guys

A picture says a thousand words ... well, you get the idea. Owe a heck of a lot to all of you (plus my wife :)) and what a relief. The doctor continues to be amazed. He thought I may have dropped a little but not this much. Bypassed the exceecllent range completely and went from good to non diabetic. Mike :)

If I could still drink Guinness, I'd down a 12 pack and not blink, I'm so happy. I'll be content to just celebrate this with my mates on here !!!!!!!!!

HI Mike & sorry I missed the excellent news from you yesterday. I've read some of the post to you and all I can say, I agree.

You have been an inspiration for me also. I think of you whizzing round your driveway 100 times, no mean feat, lowering those numbers (in the warmth I may add), when I'm trudging, down our very long access road in the wind & rain, but it's kept me going and helped me enormously.

Well done & may it continue.

That's very humbling Neil and my thanks to you :) I reckon we all push each other along and that is a GREAT life lesson for all inside and outside our T1 / T2 community. To imagine I inspire others strikes me as amazing so thanks again :)

I did another 100 laps last nite and got myself down to 5.5. Mike

Yay! We're twins! Seriously though, you must feel like you just want to explode with joy. Well done.

Thanks Dibbles :)

One of my favourite Springsteen songs is "One Step Up" which includes the lyrics "one step up and two steps back". Perverse I know given for me it's two steps forward one step back but I have that running in my head when I'm walking.

My best Mike :)

Can't believe I missed this thread yesterday!

WELL DONE!!!

What are you doing to celebrate? :D

Hi Brunneria :) Thanks a lot ... and what am I doing to celebrate? Nothin' .... just aiming for a sub 40 reading come March. Despite what I've done I still set myself targets that others have achieved and think "why can't I do that?"

With America comin' up, I want to got to the visa interview at the US Consulate in Sydney armed with a medical report that states the progress I've made rather than show them a piece of paper that indicates I've let this damned thing beat me.

Cheers Mike :)

Hi Mike,
To do this hanging up-side-down is impressive:cool:, I did my 'trudge' tonight in the rain & wind but at least I was the right way up!;)
