Would be great, but unlikely to bearound in the next decade...much better than the closed loop system that involves wearing extra gadgetry.

Again though they have to minimise any side effects or interactions with other drugs or differing body needs....

It is something for youngsters to bear in mind for the future.

My dad promised me 30+ years sho there would be a cure for T1 in my life time.. But I think it will be in your generation not mine...

I went to a JDRF event a few months ago and there was a talk all about the development of smsrt insulin. The JDRF events are well worth attending as there is loads of info

This was the first I had heard of it all, as i was looking about as my cousin is going to be doing some fundraising and came across this! I am intrigued to know how it will work successfully as tablets was never an option for us was it

Well DD, you never know. If the early human trials go well, it could get the thumbs up from the FDA quite quickly. Definitely a story to keep a watchful eye on.

Agreed... But things like pumps are actually taking 7 years from conception to release of the product. Hopefully this could be quicker...

Not being an expert i assume that the digestive system is too slow for rapid acting insulin or maybe the liver would just suck it all up straight away so that it wouldn't work for very long.
With this new concept, it appears to float around in the blood stream until it's needed and wouldn't be recognised as insulin ( by the liver) because of the special coating.
That's my take on it anyway.

Given that Novo's oral insulin analogue is still in phase 1 of R&D, this is likely to be a good 20 years off. Doesn't stop it being very interesting though!

Not seen this before Nicola so good find :)

Views, looks very promising.

A potential cure for diabetes has been talked about since I was diagnosed in 1972, but all promising developments have failed to reach a successful conclusion in this period. There is definite reluctance by 'Big Pharma' to pursue any of these due to the catastrophic loss of profits if a cure were developed. This idea has the possibility of altering big pharma's mindset, since the product would need to be manufactured on a continuous basis.

As I work in medical science, albeit radiation therapy, I find all this stuff fascinating. The potential to take 1 pill a day as a type 1 is quite remarkable.

Wouldn't it be a fantstic acheivement :joyful: there is always hope............

RRB :)
