Hi, I am going skiing in a few weeks, and just wondering if my insulin pens freeze with the cold weather, does this damage the insulin once defrosted and is it still effective. I know about keeping the pens close to my body etc, but sometimes this doesn't work- thanks

Freezing insulin can affect the efficacy of the insulin, yes. You really don't want it freezing.

I would try and keep it inside if you can..............

being active during skiing is unlikely to bring your sugars up, so you shouldn't need any insulin apart from meal times.........well that's how I would try to work it, but I realise it might not work out like that..........

I would of though that keeping the insulin close to your body would be sufficient..........have you actually witnessed the insulin freezing before..........?

your can wallets that keep insulin cool in the hotter climates, these would probably work in the colder ones too as it keeps the inside of them at the same temperature.....so I understand it....

If you can keep the bolus pen close to yr body ........put in old sock and make a hole in the ankle part and thread some circular elastic through the holes to stop the pen from coming out, create a longish loop and hang around yr neck underneath a jumper.

Once frozen it should be thrown away, good suggestions about keeping it close to your body to prevent it happening.

Just thought of something else.......get a 99p or pounland travel wallet that you can hang over yr neck. This will take the pens and also yr bg meter. Bg meters need to be kept close to the body in freezing cold temps as when cold they wont work Grrrrr

When I skied I just kept the pen and spare in an inside jacket pocket. Similar with a pump, I would just keep it out of the wind and next to my body, plenty warm enough.
