Losing my taste for meat and fish

Lately I've been losing my taste for meat and fish. I was never a huge meat-eater, and went for years as a raw vegan, but went fully back to meat/fish several years ago. Now it seems that I can only eat the smallest piece of meat or fish with my meal. I didn't even enjoy the Christmas turkey I made, and I've always loved turkey. I'm off tuna fish, can barely tolerate ham or bacon and am not enjoying chicken that much either, only small pieces in soup. Beef is the only thing I can tolerate in any decent-sized portion anymore, and usually only as a hamburger, or small pieces in a stew.

I'm not sure what is happening. I wasn't a raw vegan before because I didn't like meat - I did it for health reasons. So why is it all tasting thick and gross to me now? I am on Metformin but no other medication. I am a T2 and have IBS but no other conditions.

I worry what I will eat if I have to give up meat and still stay low-carb because big quantities of vegetables really upsets my stomach, and too many nuts and cheese derail my weight-loss efforts . :(

Has anyone had a total change of taste buds (*besides* lowering their need for sweet stuff) after diagnosis/starting meds/going low-carb?

Thanks!

Metformin has a possible side effect of altering sense of taste.

had some eggy burps early on with metaformin which put me off food but its better now

You can join the veggie thread :)

No I really don't know why your taste buds are changing , but agree about the metformin....it does or can do strange things with taste etc...

Great.........*sigh*......I'm going to be spending all my time making three meals - adult step-child is the fussiest eater I've ever met, hubby isn't a veggie fan and now I'm off most meat. And no, neither will even try low-carb options or 95% of vegetables. Wish I could hire a cook! :D

Just an idea... if they're both adult and healthy, and and refuse to make allowances for your condition, why not suggest they get their own meals?

Hahahahaaaaaaaaaaa Good one! :D The kid simply will not eat (we've tried that before - he "hates food") and the hubs works very long hours, so I am the official cook!

Totally agree with you Deejay. Had the same problem with my son years back (fussy git). i told him if he didn't like what I was cooking or the way I cooked it, he'd better learn to cook his own. I have never looked back and on the odd occasion he will make me a dinner. Always Spag Bol though.:D

Nothing wrong with spag bol. Apart from the spag. Unfortunately.

Why would cheese and nuts derail your weight-loss efforts if you're eating those instead of meat and fish? I can see how additional cheese or nuts could impact significantly...

Well, when I don't have *some* meat, I feel hungry. It only take a little meat to fill me, since lately I'm finding it very "thick" (can't think of a better word), rich and filling. So I guess I assumed if I made the amount in cheese and nuts, I'd gain weight. But perhaps not. Thanks for making me rethink that. :)

If he were MY son, I'd have kicked his **** to the curb long ago, believe me. My parents never put up with such shenanigans. :)

Heaven forbid the poor boy should accidentally get a large dose of metformin in his dinner.
Ooh I must stop this :stop:
