New Year, New LCHF Me

Once i've finished at the library I'm going to treat myself to 2 squares of Lindt Excellence 90% Cocoa Dark Chocolate Bar and a glass of diet coke citrus zest.

I'm at my lowest blood sugar level in several months at 6.8 just now. I forgot to test this morning when I had 2 ryvitaa fruiit crunch crispbread, followed by swimming for 1 1/2 hours at 10:15 am and my blood sugar after that was 7.8 at midday. the carb cravings is hitting me hard as I can't think straight, my body has gonee into shake mode, i can't concentrate and i feel like that if i don't have some shortbread that i bought from sainsburys, that i'm going to faint. I also bought some ham slices on my way to the uni library. Its no wonder people are addicted to carbs, my cravings are really powerful.
It may be that you also had what is called a false hypo. This can happen when BG normalises but the body is used to very high levels.

I had another false hypo this morning as my blood sugar was at 5.3, then i had 2 mini croissants from my local coop which had 25 grams of carbs after waking up late to uni. I also bought a punnet of 6 plums as I got told that plums are low gi fruit.

Step away from the shortbread, the mini croissants and the plums, they are all high carb and/or sugar foods!!!

That's exactly when you have your mini Babybel and your peanuts in a clip top box. To save those croissant. They will revive the carb craving you know......

I haven't touched the shortbread, but I did have a plum at 11am as my blood sugar was 4.8 at 10:35am.

I've gone from having +200g of carbs to under 50g a day and I've stuck with it for more than a week. Plus my blood sugars today have been borderline hypo at 4.5 at 2:30pm, 4.1 at 5pm and 5.3 at 8pm.

The thing about this brave new world is its not just for a week. It's not just for a month, or probably even just a year. It's a new way of life.

Undoubtedly, you have done so much better than a few weeks ago, and I honestly applaud you for that, but I fear I'm seeing the thin end of the wedge appear, with creep.

To be clear, 4.5 isn't borderline hypo. 4.0 is borderline hypo. Hypo, for those on potentially hypo inducing meds begins under 4.0, so I guess 3.9. If when you get down near those numbers you feel iffy, then by all means have something to eat, but spare yourself from the carbs. They don't do you any favours.

If you find yourself down at 4.0 all the time, then it could be time to trim the meds, rather than up the foods.

Have you weighed yourself of late? Is there any positive scale action?

My weight has been up and down. 24 stone 4 in Nov 2014, 22 stone 9 in Jan 2015, 23 stone 6 at start of Feb and now 23 stone yesterday.

you are doing well, I would focus on your BG and your 50g carbs and let the weight follow.
when your BG is right, it makes it easier to lose weight, because your body isn't flushed with insulin.
also I found I lost weight in fits and starts, some even put on weight before they lose some.

it may be hard to break the 'reach for carbs' reflex, but it needs to be done and you will look back and wonder how they had such a hold on you. :)

my blood sugars today have been ok:

11am - 8.4
1pm - 5.3
4pm - 6.4
6:30pm - 4.5

I missed breakfast as I woke up late and had lunch at 1pm, which was a beer and a burger with bacon, onion, cheese, lettuce, tomato and mayo without the brioche bun and had 3 mini babybels at 4pm.

I've had 2 free pancakes with lemon juice and sugar free maple syrup at 7:30pm provided by several uni societies working together and i totally regret ordering them as my blood sugar went up to 20.6!!! I immediately chased them up and they told that they got several orders mixed up, they even offered me another pancake and i just stormed out of their pancake van.

Well done on pre-pancake disaster figures @akindrat18 , it was going really well until that ****-up. Thank goodness it's pancake day only once a year ;) Keep up the good work, you're doing well.

At least now pancake day is over. my blood sugar levels crept up to 24.7 at midnight and this morning at 6am went back down to 20.2 and at 11am after having 4 scrambled eggs and a handful of cheese went down to 15.3.

I'm due to start a driving lesson at 12:30 and I feel nervous that I might have a false hypo during the lesson. Also what fruit can i eat that is relatively cheap and low carb?

My blood sugars have dropped to 8.3, but now i'm experiencing a change in bowel movements with diarhhoea and an increase in passing gas. Also I will be having an indian takeaway with my friends and was wondering what would be okay to have?

what veg dishes do you reccommend as i can't think of any as with previous indian takeaways, its always been a chicken balti, lamb tikka starter, pilau rice, naan bread and onion bhajis.

chicken balti, lamb tikka =good
onion bhajis..ask if they use a chickpea flour..then they are ok and are your carbs
I would ask the take away, tell them you can't have rice or breads and you want a vegi dish without potato and be low carb..see what they can offer, there should be a long list. indians are right in to vegetarian dishes

I didn't have the curry. The takeaway place only did 3 veg dishes and they all contained potatos, plus the onion bhajis were made from garam flour. Instead I had some mini babybels.
