Hi just joined need some advice dads insulin diabetic just took his sugars they are 30.5 all week they have been above 15-28 last week and this week in the 20s do we need to contact dr told gp yesturday he didn't seem botherd as dad has water infection any advice would be great xxx

Hi,

Infections can and do raise BS levels, but being in the 30's could be dangerous. How does he feel in himself? If you are at all worried you must find some emergency help, either an out of hours service or A&E or Emergency Care Centre. Let us know how you go on. Your doctor should be bothered. Those levels are very high.

Hi. Yes, those levels need urgent attention. Do see the GP urgently or go to A&E. Your Dad needs to have plenty of water and if his diet is not good he must reduce the carbs right down. It's likely his insulin needs to be increased in the short term but you need to seek guidnace on that.

Thanks so much for the replays appreciate it he said he dosent feel to we'll although on antibiotics for a water infection he has long term catheter and insulin dependant due to emergency gall bladder removal they damaged kidneys and pancreas in the process as dad nearly died. He has Parkinson's disease as we'll and he's been unwell for a few weeks constant uti on antibiotics and over last 2 weeks sugars have increased we have up the insulin on instruction from diabetic nurse and doctor but he has a controlled diet and only drinks water a few cups of tea! We have phoned doctor and they have said keep eye on him tonight and if still up in morning to contact the diabetic nurse!!! I left a message on her phone today and she didn't reply!! Fingers crossed he will be ok! I'm dads main carer and moved back home to care for him any way thanks for ur help xxx

Please don't be fobbed off by your doctor. Your dad needs urgent attention, and this is best coming from A&E or Emergency Centre. Perhaps you should dial 111 or if he is unable to get to these places, dial 999. Those levels are too high ...... please seek help. Plenty of fluids are essential.

Great advice from everyone. Figures as high as that warrant immediate attention

it is too late to be of any help, but you could ask the dr/nurse for sick day rules like these, to correct his blood levels

being T2, your dad probably won't have ketones because he may have some pancreas function, but it's a good idea to get urine ketostiks and keep a check, I would also ask for some blood ketostiks
