Hi,

I'm new to the forum, my 4 year old grandaughter was diagnosed with type 1 a couple of months ago, and it has been going really well, today however she has caught the sickness bug from school and although her blood sugar is not massive (9 at present) her keytones are 1.1 my daughter has tried to give her lemonade but she is just bringing everything back up, my daughter is panicking a bit now any suggestions? She is phoning the diabetic nurse who just keeps telling her to give the child the lemonade but she can't keep this down.

Hi there and welcome to the forum :)
sorry to hear your grandaughter is feeling poorly and as with any small child they don't really understand "why" we do the things we do to look after them.
the nurse is suggesting the lemonade to make sure the insulin in your grandaughter's body does not push her low.

i would suggest that your daughter tests the little girls blood sugar much more often -- definitely every hour and more if she thinks that her blood may be rising or dropping.
there are sick day rules as to administering insulin and testing somewhere here on this website -- i will find them and post a link in a few minutes.

as she is fighting an infection it is much more likely her blood sugar will rise not fall -- do tell your daughter this.
i won't be long -- back in a few :)

Hi and welcome. I am mystified by the lemonade? If someone is on insulin and with slightly elevated blood sugar and elevated ketones I would have thought having plenty of water was a good approach but why lemonade? If it's normal lemonade with sugar surely that will raise the blood sugar and ketones? No problem with no-added sugar lemonade etc. Sounds like a small increase in insulin may be needed as we all find when sick and on insulin. I agree frequent testing is very relevant.

Hi @Daibell
as the young girl is only 4 and she is newly diagnosed ( and her mother and grandmother will be a bit bewildered by it all )and her body may still be producing some of its own insulin the lemonade will be a medical persons "playing it safe" advice. For all of us veterans who have been doing this a long time we get to know our bodies and would probably avoid the lemonade.
