What is a hypo?

Hi,

Funny enough. Even non Ds can show hypo syptoms if they haven't eaten/skippered a meal for what ever reason.. My non D mate in his youth used to get the shakes & was fuddled.. Though there is no way of knowing what the actual BS was..
My wife's nonD house-mate while she was a student suffered similar if "hungry" & actually slumped over on one ocaision..

I worked with a guy (another nonD.) a couple of years back. He was a pleasant easy going bloke. (He was a pleasure to work with.) This one day, lunch break was running late & his mood changed. Everything got "negative" & a little ranty... Not so much at me, just the job in general.. "Time out!" I said "lets eat.." He was fine after getting a bit of grub down him..

Bit like that advert.. "A right diva when hungry."
If you had read my blog on my journey, you would discover what hypos do to you and the effects they have on your life.

I'm non diabetic, I have had more hypos than you could possibly imagine.

A hypo is a body's natural response to low blood glucose levels. How can you put a figure on it?
My hypo zone is under 3.8.
There are others who can go as low as 3mmols and still not suffer symptoms.

Believe it or not. Some substance abusers symtoms are similar during a "withdrawal".. Including the "headaches".. (Though I don't get those.)

Carb withdrawal anyone..? Lol

Sorry @nosher8355 our posts crossed. I wouldn't disagree with your last point.. The problem is most Non Ds don't carry a meter.. But the symptoms are there..! ;)

I had a continuous headache, but not severe, for years, it wasn't until I stopped having them, that I knew I had one!!!!
The withdrawal period is also a response to doing without most things drastically!!

One of the symptoms of starting low carbing is the continuous snacking and hunger.
Think it's Jack that has a saying that goes, the more carbs you eat, the more you want!!!

Didn't that same thing happen just recently to a well known TV automotive presenter, when he didn't get his hot meal. ;)

Lol. I haven't heard that one.. Is that the latest?

There is the old adage of most arguments happening around Christmas.. Maybe late dinners. (Carb withdrawal.) There is always a wait till after the "Queen" or something... Coupled with the livers function not dumping due to alcohol consumption..??

Yeah, I was referring to the Jeremy Clarkson incident that got him fired from Top Gear. Apparently the whole thing started when they were doing some "on location" filming in the evening, and he found out that no hot meal had been organised.

Lol. I used to do film location work.. The irony is, the catering company always have enough food. Which the crew & support can't touch until the main cast have been served... The "main cast" are normally the last off a "period drama" set for a break... Leaving us to stand around literally dressed as "Bisto kids" sniffing the aroma... ;)

My husband was using a now illegal substance to help with weight training 4 years ago , it wasn't illegal at the time or he wouldn't have touched it.

He took some before playing football one night and hadn't eaten. He suffered a hypo and couldn't understand where he was or what was going on.

He had a bottle of lucoxade and a Mars bar, when he got home I tested his blood and he was still 3.0 then.

Who knows how low he had dropped at the time.
He is non diabetic

Mmmm. Probably this "performance enhancer" worked by increasing pancreas insulin output. Or lowering insulin resistance? Aiding muscle absorption in the energy boost..? The drug initially developed for type 2 treatment??
I ain't no doctor. But some nonD american weight trainers use & inject small amounts of "slin"... Guess what that stuff is?? ;)

Yeh I know, very risky though, someone with a working pancreas taking on extra insulin is a dangerous game.

Fortunately my husband is bradycardic as this enhancer accelerated his heart so much had he not been he would've had a heart attack.

It left him with permanent tinnitus and vestibular disfunction though so can no longer fly. No more sunny beach holidays for me :(

Indeed. Which brings it back to the original question. "What is a hypo?" I'd say it is an insulin overdose. Whether due to "unknowns" or just miscalculation in a T1/insulin user. 5 to drive. You wouldn't while drunk...
Everyone else? Who knows.. Dare I say it.. The body crying out for carbs to work on..? A sort of withdrawal..

I apreciate I'm oversimplifying.. Or wrong!? Lol I'm trying not to ramble on. :)

I definitely think insulin needs carbs when type 1

Hey, it's just thinking aloud... ;) The D care ethos from the "professionals" carries the same banner..

Some of my posts I revisit. I quite often wonder where my head was at..

It is in my case!
I flush insulin!!!!
It is not withdrawal for me. We all need insulin to break down the glucose, too much Insulin and you hypo.
Also, it deposits unwanted fats into your endocrine system.
