Diet Drink Test/Trick! - Test it on your meter!

Hello people,

I have known this trick for a couple of months now however I have only just joined the forums (I was diagnosed 10 months ago)

Anyway -
Diet drinks tested on my glucose meter come up 'LO'

And full sugar carbonated drinks just come up as an error. Orange juice comes up in the high 20s.

I have tested this on multiple drinks and I am currently still testing more however I thought I would share this information to save you all them unfortunate times of drinking a full sugar drink!

I've never had to do this to my drinks as I can always tell whether it's full sugar. But it's always fun to try it anyway :)

I totally agree Nicola, you can normally tell the difference however on one occasion after stating I needed diet about 5 times she still gave me full sugar and just said it was diet, thinking that I wouldn't know the difference.
After this confusion at the bar I then thought I might just be paranoid and imagining it could be sweeter. Drank the full drink and went on to feeling extremely ill.

From that experience I then started to experiment with my glucose meter and therefore discovering this trick.

It could save people a little bit of paranoia and let people relax if they know for 100% they have a 0 sugar drink.

I've had that experience before, it's so annoying how bar staff automatically think they are in the right and you are wrong (isn't the customer always right?!) When it happened to me I went with the staff member up to the drinks section and physically watched them pour me my drink. Needless to say they did it right that time ;)

That's great to know, but do you check to see if aspertame is used as the sweetener, if it has, oh dear. This links tells about aspetame side effects. http://www.sweetpoison.com/aspartame-side-effects.html
Basically it's a poison.
It's also used in many other products to sweeten, even in some sugar substitute sweeteners.
No diet drinks for me or anyone that is looking after themselves.

Thanks for sharing that Paul.
First I have ever heard of that, however without disrespect I will continue to drink diet drinks.
I believe you would encounter problems with large doses of sweetener, however, that is the same with a lot of things.
You have to take everything in moderation.
Also I believe if it was that bad I am sure health and safety for food productions would take it off the selves, surely.

If I ever encounter any problems with sweeteners you will be definitely the first person I inform.

Thanks for the tip; I'm often conscious about whether I've been given diet or not so will definitely give it a try!

@Mikeylulz, you could save on the test strip and only buy diet drinks in cans, bottles and cartons that are clearly marked, I simply don't trust those pump dispensers as we have had numerous accounts of members being served the wrong drink over the years.........despite being assured by the server that their drink was diet.

Thank you for your advice, however I am meaning those times you cannot get a can/bottle that is clearly marked. For example, McDonald's or if you're at a Club/Bar.

This trick clearly distinguishes whether it is diet or not and will save all the members over the years, just like you said, getting served wrong drinks.

I remember running out of bloodsticks and when i asked for urine sticks (because i really really want to know what my bloodsugers are) the chemist said its a waste of time, he said urine sticks tend to be 6 hrs behind and so completely useless for a type 1.
 
Yes, but you chew a tiny bit of the food or take a tiny mouthful of drink and spit a weeny bit of saliva onto a Diastix. If there's sugar in it, the colour will indicate.
 
The aspartame link is nonsense, people constantly try to discredit it and now the net is full of such links. In over 100 tests they have failed to find an issue with it unless you have a condition called PKA.

I had muscle spasms and pains which stopped when I stopped having diet coke. I believe my own body over any internet studies or articles. Aspartame is bad for us in high quantities. I had 2 litres of diet coke a day for several years. It also increases insulin resistance in T2's because the body is fooled into releasing more insulin because of the sweet taste. As a treat it's fine, but not for me.

Surprised you don't have shares in the company and I'm not surprised of you getting muscle spasms with it!

Well yes I know it was a silly thing to do now!

lol I was desperate to lose weight and the diet sheet given to me by my surgery said 'limitless amounts of sugar free drinks'. So here I am with still several stones to lose. :rolleyes:
 
Um yes, moderation!!!!! I think the caffeine didn't do you much good either.
