any new medication for type 2

hi was on metformin powder oral solution, just add to water, it was made unavailable, so now on tablet metformin , very large and have to dig a knife in to break it up, then crush using a pastel and mortor crusher thing.then put half in my mouth at once with a bit of cereal,was wondering if anyone knew of any new liquid for type 2, am not allowed metformin liquid too expensive.have tried a few smaller pills gave me weight gain,

As you will see from this chart, Metformin liquid is expensive. it was £120 per month in 2013.

I don't take any medication but there may be smaller pills that help to control diabetes that do not cause weight gain.
I hope others can tell you what they are using and the size of the tablet. Anything that is not SR can be crushed, have you tried putting the tablet in a tablespoon and then putting the back of another same sized spoon on top and crushing them that way?

Hi busybee. Tablet forms of metformin are often slow release to minimise any undesirable gastric effects. Breaking them or crushing them up is not recommended as it defeats the slow release property. I'd recommend that if for example you have been taking 1000mg tablets then ask your doctor to prescribe 2x500mg instead of 1x1000mg.

The smaller pills were probably glicazide. A different drug and used in much smaller doses than metformin, hence the smaller tablets. Drugs like glicazide stimulate more insulin secretion and this can definitely promote weight gain.

Hi. Unfortunately there is nothing really equivalent to Metformin and the tablet size is aproblem for some. Metformin works by reducing insulin resistance in those who are overweight and also reduces the liver's glucose output a bit. If you are not overweight then it may be worth discussing stopping it with the GP as it only has a small effect overall unless overweight. If overweight, then a low-carb diet can be just as helpful.

I know where you are coming from with metaformin I really battle to swallow it I find milk is slightly easier to wash it down and as soon as it leaves my mouth I drop my chin down towards my chest which stretches the throat have you tried a dab of butter on it?
I also have 1/4 of a piece of dark Lindt choc once it's gone
