Since joining the forum I've tried really hard at lowering my carb in take, I was doing really well cutting down gradually and was over the moon when my HBA1C's came down at my review 3 weeks ago, but the last to days all I've wanted is carbs and I don't no why, does anyone else just really crave carbs from time to time?

Yes, Hormones are a git for that! what are you down to? could you increase fat a bit?

My nurse said to wait before reducing fat in take as I've lost a lot of weight due to starting thyroid tablets.
My hba1c's have come down to 8.4% which is not great but better than it has been for 2 years, I've been type 1 for 19 years but the last to 2 years I've really struggled.

Sorry I meant how many carbs are you on a day? also I was saying increase fat! itll fill you up and reduce carb cravings :)

I don't crave carbs as such, but have times when I'm craving " something " but haven't a clue what ! I put it down to the same reasons as @Engineer88 , dratted hormones:rolleyes:

I find a small bar of either Aldi or Lidl 85% dark chocolate usually hits the spot, or else berries with whipped cream . The chocolate is lovely, and if you are not used to 85%, try the70% first.

The carb count for the Aldi 85% that I'm currently holding in my hot little paws is 4.6g for the whole bar, so excellent damage limitation for cravings :D

I noticed that you joined about 2.5 months ago. Not a long time to be on lower carbohydrates. Dont forget the carbs are an addiction just like cigarettes, booze etc. Even though you dump them, it takes more time to stop thinking about them from time to time. The longer you stay on course the easier it becomes. Always remember "if it was so easy, then everybody could do it". Stay strong and good luck.

P.S. Its a good idea not to keep stocks at home of any of the "other life" temptations, it always ends in regret. How do I know........?

We have all been so used to hi-carb food, it's all some of us know by literal consumer brainwashing, all we can do is keep focused on eating the right foods and making the best choices for us, but we live in a world saturated by refined carbohydrate foods everywhere, it makes it harder and so we have to be intelligent about our choices; for me building up a menu of low carb foods i like has helped and now i can automatically make better choices. It's got a lot easier for me to walk past the ice cream fridges and i actually hate looking at chocolate bars and confectionary in sweet shops, i have retrained my mind to have an aversion to the sweet hi-carb foods because they really are to me a 'deadly poison', this has helped me break my addiction to sugar.

Agree with all said above - refined carbs are a demon and a result of modern food manufacturing. When I first went low carb and checked the contents of my food cupboard I was horrified to see the amount of sugar in manufactured goods, including what I thought was the humble Oxo cube, this is a good way to cleanse and get rid of refined carbs - then it's pretty much back to basics and making everything yourself, I make everything from scratch now so I know exactly what's in it, also our bodies need more natural food to help build our immune systems, eating raw food is the best thing we can do.

It would help you to have on hand quick and easy to prepare foods, so if you get a crave then try a handful of olives, nuts, cucumber with a yoghurt/mint dip, cheese - that type of thing.

Try to eat 'mindfully' too - so savour and chew each mouthful well and not get distracted so your enjoy what you are eating more - the cravings will pass ;)

Sorry I haven't answered anyone sooner I've been in work. I'm not carb counting as such I've just been more sensible and reduced such has portion sizes and instead of eating crisps or choc I've had carrot sticks or party sausages instead but I'm going to start carb counting now, my GP said not to for some reason but i'm going to give it ago anyway. Thank you for all your comments and supports.x

Thank you, I was just taking what the diabetes team were telling me to take from my diary readings but I don't feel that's doing me any good that's why I've chosen to read through the posts on here and look on the site to get an I site into how to carb count and bolus manage to I can maybe reduce how much I'm having to inject.

Your doing well Trace. The BDEC site is really good by all accounts but you want to ask your DSN to get you on a carb counting course such as DAFNE, they teach you to carb count and match your insulin accordingly and also go into other aspects of living with type 1 diabetes such as what to do when your ill (Sick-Day Rules) and how to adjust your insulin when exercising, it really is a worthwhile course.

I've been asking them since before Christmas so I think it's just the case of a waiting game to get on a course hopefully.
