Hi all I am new here, although I have had type 2 for about years!! My average 6 month test has been around 6.9 however my latest test was around 8 I was retested a month later January 2015 and it was again 8.This week I have been ill with symptons of gastroenteritis and i haven't eaten much .This morning at 10.15 I checked my bs and it was 9.8 bearing in mind I hadn't eaten anything since 8am the previous day!! I had a large breakfast and my bs was 12.5 after an hour ,3 hours later it was up to 14.5 and an hour later it had dropped to 13.4. Should I go and see the doctor or would a stomach bug affect my blood sugars.Btw I use 2g metformin daily
Cheers Ian

If it was me, I would see my GP.
I believe that the rise in your temperature because of your gastrointestinal problems have elevated them. Drink plenty of water, eat small meals. If you can.

Hi,

Any infection may raise blood glucose.

Every time I get a bug, my BG rises by about 3mmol/l and just seems to sit there until the infection passes.

Having said that, I wouldn't hesitate to contact your doc if you have any concerns. :)
Did you?

If so, what did they say, and how do you feel now?

Update ,I have been to docs and had blood test and I am now taking Gliclazide as well as metformin, not happy as I have read no alcohol , does this mean I can never have a beer again !!! Btw thanks for the replies

What are you eating Ian? Are you low carbing? Give as a days worth of what you eat.

Hi Dawn I have had type 2 for 6 years ish my 6/12 month blood tests have always been around 6.9-7 but in last 6 months my sugars have gone from 7 to 8 to now 9.1 ,my diet hasn't changed i eat a low fat chicken pasta rice boiled potatoes diet very little fat and no added sugar, sweetener in tea!

Ian you really need to drop that pasta, rice and potatoes if you want to manage your BGs and potentially get back off the glic. They are doing you no good at all. This is the EatWell Plate rubbish again I'm afraid, it's quite wrong for diabetics - carbohydrates convert rapidly to sugar.

Hi Ian, have a look at the first three links in my sig below, starting with the LCHF explained one :)

Thank you for your detailed reply certainly has given me food for thought, pardon the pun!! I shall certainly investigate LCHF although this raises another concern ,high colestorol,I have had a quadruple heart bypass !!

I tend to look at it as being low carb full fat in that I swapped low fat spreads, yoghurts, milk etc for the full fat versions inc butter. I also found that my cholesterol has reduced since doing it. Obviously with your heart history you will have to do more research and perhaps discuss with your medical team. Are you currently taking statins because they can raise BS eg mine went up by 1.0% when I was taking them.

Are you on a smartphone or tablet?

This is what you should be seeing (but without the embedded YouTube video):

T2 diagnosed March 2014.
Diet (LCHF, 50 g carbs per day or less) and exercise, no medication.
HbA1c March 2014 - 65 mmol/mol (8.1%); July 2014 - 45 (6.3%); October 2014 - 42 (6.0%); March 2015 - 38 (5.6%).
