Hi my 13 year old daughter was diagnosed 4 days ago and after a 4 day stay in hospital we are now at home.
We all felt very anxious but really seem to be checking carbs and unit counting really well.

Our only stumbling block is that we have had a family holiday to Cuba booked all year and are due to go in 9 days, we are very looking forward to it but are unsure how this is going to work when we wont know the carb content of the all inclusive food.

Has anyone with diabetes been to Cuba and if so how did you manage?

Thankyou

Can't answer your question but I'm presuming the docs have said she's fit to travel, have you remembered to amend your travel insurance? Xxx

Hi, I've been to Cuba and your daughter will be fine. Make sure to test more often as the heat will have an effect, May need to reduce insulin requirements slightly. As for food, most hotels are all inclusive and offer a wide range of food, much of which will be similar to what she eats at home, chicken, veg, eggs, etc etc. I would over estimate carbs slightly, better to run a little high than risk hypo. Hope you have a great time.

Hi @Schoey glad you all seem to be coping well, try not to worry yourself too much about when you are away, make sure you take all medications with you and plenty of test strips as you will probably do it more than necessary, if you are able to download an app called 'carbs & cals' I absolutely swear by this for when I'm eating out and if I haven't made a meal myself and don't know how many carbs are in it, you will soon learn to work it out but the app is a fantastic help I find

Thankyou, we do have the book and are going to get the app aswell otherwise we have orderd lots of meds to take with us. All still very new and doing well now we are home but feel a little daunting going on holiday with diabetes.

Thankyou that reassuring and we have the nurse coming tomorrow to give us some holiday advice.
