Quick question if thats ok,Just recently told I'm t2 and just started today to check my bloods
Before tea i was 6.4 and 2 hours later upto 13.4
Is this right! I don't think and i only had four small new potatoes with some other veg and meat
Sorry for the basic question

Hi and welcome, those figures are a bit high 4.7....8.5 are the recommended. Try getting to around 4.7 before a meal, if you are higher do a bit of excercise, run up &down stairs a few time it will help bring you down. After eating you need to try and keep below 8.5 (nice guidelines) four potatoes probably didn't help your post meal reading, the greatest carb culprits are potatoes, rice, pasta and bread whether white/brown/wholemeal/or seeded bread is bread. What else did you have in your meal and what other foods are you regularly eating?
You need to switch to full fat dairy too ie; milk/ yogurts/butter & cheese. Tell me what your diet looks like & I will try & help further

Thanks for the reply Poohtiggy
Not done much exercise today just been on this forum getting a lot of good info
I understand more today than I've been told from my doctor. It was just the readings after food being high i understand the carb issues and thought it may of been lower.
My diets not been the best a lot of carbs which I'm going to cut out and start tomorrow with my exercise regime!! after my purchase of a meter

That sounds good, once you have a meter test before and two hours after aiming for those levels, obviously the higher your first reading the higher the second will be good luck

Forgot to add most of my meals have a lot of carbs,Rice, bread some type of potatoes but because I've not been testing didn't see them as being the main problem just thought i needed some meds to control my bs

Hi and welcome,

Meds are not a miracle cure. Diet is the key, no matter which meds you are on. (your profile says diet only?). Carbs are the culprits in raising BS levels. We all have different tolerance levels to different carbs, but a meter will tell you which ones your body can cope with. Use it to learn. If you keep a food diary and record your before and after levels alongside, patterns will emerge from which you can learn. It may be you can tolerate some carbs in small portions, but you won't know until you test. Clearly those potatoes didn't agree with you. Also, did you have other starchy carbs and possibly gravy with the meal? Gravy is the devil for me personally, as is anything made with flour.

Hi
Yes gravy with mince peas carrots cabbage and the four small potatoes
Its a learning curve for me at the moment
Thanks
I think i will need some more strips for my meter!!

LOL Yes, you will need a lot of strips initially.
Gravy, peas, carrots, potatoes! No wonder you shot up so much! It is all trial and error. Carrots and peas are quite carby. Cabbage is fine. Test, test, test. If you shoot up, reduce portions or avoid the carby bits then test again until you reach a point where that meal is OK for you. I know I can cope with a spoonful of peas, or 2 new potatoes, or 2 roast spuds, or even 6 or 7 chips, but no more than that. There is a book called Carbs & Cals from Amazon that is excellent for helping you discover how many carbs there are in thousands of foods (also an App). It was my bible when I first started and I still use it now.

Are you buying your own strips? If so did you get the SD Codefree as that is by far the cheapest :)

Think i need to do some more research on my diet ideas!!

Hi. Yes, follow the advice you have been given. Note that most root veg are high carb. Go for raw carrots not stewed ones to minimise carb absorption; same for porridge which is best as cold oats. This way the cell structure isn't broken down so the sugars are not freely released.

Not many GPs will give meters and test strips to T2 patients. The SD Codefree is a brand, have a look on this website: http://www.homehealth-uk.com/medical/blood_glucose_monitor_testing.htm With a promo code you can get a box of 50 strips for just over £5 which is a much better deal that the Accu-chek :)
