I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes a few weeks ago .I have been taking 3 metformin a day before meals.I have been feeling really ill the last few days ,sweating, dry mouth, blurred vision ,leg and hip pain ,nausea and very bad runs.I went to the doctors today and he seems to think that its side effects of the metformin,I told him the only new symptom was the runs all the other symptoms I had before diagnosis.hes put me 1000m slow release metformin once a day .I have high blood pressure ,high cholesterol, high white blood cell count my doctor has now ordered me to have more blood tests to try and find out if all these symptoms im suffering are from some other cause .He checked my blood and it was 6.1 which he said was very good and my hb1 test was only 58 on diagnosing (this was a fasting test) which isnt bad at all .Im really confused I have really stuck to a good diet and lost over a stone in 4 weeks .does anyone think these symptoms are to with diabetes are is it something else .

It's impossible for us to know and while it's hard having to be patient I would wait for the blood test results and another chat with the doctor. You're doing great with your eating patterns, keep up the good work. You might want to ask your doctor if he thinks your symptoms could be due to any other meds you are on. Blurred vision can occur when the BGs come down after being high for a while, and if this is the cause it seems to resolve on its own after a few weeks, from what I've read on the forum.

Yes I am afraid you will need to wait for the tests but they may come back inconclusive. At that point make sure your doctor tries to get to the root cause and not just say they do not know what it is.

As @CatLadyNZ says the blurred vision could be from your blood sugars normalising and so could the dry mouth and sweating (false hypo). Are you on statins or are your cholesterol levels normalising from your proclaimed high levels with the blood glucose improvements?

Are you low carbing (a lot lower than you were) or doing low calorie? This could have an impact and you may be suffering from "carb withdrawal" symptoms

Hope you get it sorted

thanks for the replies .Im not on anything for high cholesterol i didnt even know I had got it until I saw the doctor yesterday.I asked him to go through my previous blood results ,about 6 months ago I had blood tests done because I was feeling really unwell ,pains in my body and joints ,tired all the time headaches ect .the receptionist rang to say I needed a repeat test I had high levels of white blood cells which could indicate some kind of infection .I had 5 repeat blood test all with the same thing the 5 th came back and I was told it was ok ,never saw the doctor or results until I asked for them to be explained to me yesterday .I was told I Had high white blood cell count 14.9 ,high cholesterol ,2 occasions of high red cells ,high heamoglobin but my doctor said they are all slightly high so theres nothing to worry about lol.He said I have had high white blood cells for the last 12 months so it could just be normal for me ,when I asked why Im still feeling ill after 12 months he couldnt explain why .Im thinking I could have had diabetes for a long time but its never been picked up or acted on by my doctor .Im worried now because I have diabetes ,high cholesterol and high blood pressure but my doctor doesnt think this a problem so much so I was never told about the cholesterol ,Im seriously considering changing gps

First, as your blood sugar is not too bad, your diabetes should not be making you feel ill or causiing any long-term damage. Don't forget your total cholesterol reading has little value (GPs don't seem to get this). It's the ratio of LDL/HDL and Trigs that matter. Ask what these are. I'm sure you need to pursue the unusual blood counts to try to pin down what might be the real cause of your being unwell

thanks I will ask what they are ,Im having further blood tests on mon I will ask If i can have some kind of print out of the results that way I can check and see what they are

I have been for more blood tests I get the results tomorrow .My cholesterol ratio is 6 my doctor has told me that its not too high and that high cholesterol has nothing to do with my symptoms ,I have done some research and it say 6 is very high risk .I also have high blood pressure 140/90 ,high white cells 14.9 .Im confused as to why more doctor doesnt seem concerned about high blood pressure and high cholesterol does anyone think I should be taking medication

140/90 is not that high. Higher than they like but they only really get worried for 150 systolic and 100 diastolic (according to the hospital consultant when I had my op)

Also a total cholesterol of 6 isn't high and really means nothing. What are your HDL and trigs as these are for more an indicator to something wrong.

Changing your lifestyle may be far better for you than maintaining the same diet and popping pills

Etchy - Have they ever done a urine dip test, where they dip a special strip in your wee? Some women can have low grade urinary tract infections for ages and ages and no longer have the terrible pains we usually associate with that sort of condition.

If you haven't had that done, it could well be worth asking for it. The result is pretty much instant after a couple of minutes, and it costs pennies.

The high white cells might just be related to a minor infection that will resolve on its own. Or it could be a sign of a bladder infection, which would need testing and treatment.

Your blood pressure needs to be below 130/80... ask for a 24 hour monitor to be sure what the level really is. I found meds were necessary.

Ask for a follow up test. You may have inflammation on your bladder wall. Do you have any bladder symptoms, such as urgency to urinate, pain on urinating, feeling of incomplete emptying? I've been diagnosed with irritable bladder syndrome and that may be a possibility. You may need a referral to a urologist for further tests.
