Hi jojo, a bit more info about your husband's condition might help. :)

Does he have diabetes and if so then what type?

What are his current BGLs like, and what diabbetes medications is he taking?

Hi he has type 2 and takes 2x metformin twice a day morning and evening ....readings have been around 6 before mesls and as high as 9 2 hours after trying to do low carbs ...he has porridge in the morning with whole milk a salad for lunch....he is working and protein meal with veg for dinner ...any ideas why it hits 9 in the evening ...some nights it has been 7 or 8 ....

Hi jojo. His levels are not all that bad, but there's definitely room for improvement.

If you want to try LCHF then I'd aim for about 15 to 20g carbs per meal. A good start would be to replace the oats with something like omelet or bacon and eggs etc.

Well that's the tricky part really, because all cereals are carbs many of us on LCHF avoid them completely. Oats (porridge) is as good a cereal as any, and that's what I used to eat, but now I avoid it to keep my blood sugars down.

I recently heard of a Faux Oatmeal made with Flax Seed. I haven't tried it yet, but I ran across the recipe on Pinterest.

For people eating very low carbs, protein can sometimes be used in their place by the body to make glucose, so that may be something to think about if he's eating a lot of protein at one time. But also look at what vegetables he's having - potatoes and other root veggies can be highish in carbs, so aim for more green leafy above ground ones, and he should use his meter to check what particular foods are causing his higher evening spikes - that's the best way to find out how his body's reacting to his meals.

And swap milk with cream - milk has more sugars in the form of lactose than cream does! :p We have to remember that it's a low carb high(er) fat diet - which can seem somewhat "back to front" eating to start with. So make sure too that he's also getting plenty of "good" fats and oils, as these can help improve his good cholesterol (HDL) levels.

Oatmeal is still a lot of carbs but he could try pinhead oats. I sometimes make a batch and then reheat as the cooking/cooling process is said to turn some of the digestible starch into resistant starch that is really good for gut bacteria and generally very beneficial. I eat my small helping of reheated pinhead oats with cream as milk is too high in sugar. I've been told this is the Scottish way and I have no problems with that.

Hi jojo,
Porridge spikes me so I just have 3 desert spoons in a dish with water and soya milk. 2 mins in microwave is enough.
Then some lidl half walnuts and 2 desserts spoons of wheat germ plus 1/2 apple sliced, plus a little extra soya milk.

This makes a very nice 'muesli' and it doesn't spike me as much as a lot of porridge. I think wheat germ is protein.

Hello. I'll chuck another ingredient in the pot and suggest you search the forum for views of cholesterol levels and what they mean. The overall figure which most GPs work to is pretty meaningless and you need to know the targets for the individual levels, as mentioned by @Robbity. Maybe your husband doesn't have to worry too much about it.
