Diabetes nurse thinks I am type 1 ...Other nurse I saw before thought I was type 2 and put me on gliclozide , but blood sugar not going down as much as I would hope since I started on 30mg SR now on 120, so if shes right Im newly diagnosed type 1..Not sure what to think now .. For the last 6 weeks or thereabouts thought I was type 2! She was so lovely and so caring ,and I couldn`t fault her...but Im still a little confused...

Hi, that must be confusing indeed! I think you might want to ask about further blood tests... apparently GAD antibodies and C-peptide are the tests that are used. These may not provide a clear answer but worth a try I think.

What did the nurse say she planned to do now? Refer you to a specialist diabetes service?

What are your sugar levels at the moment?

Hi @CatLadyNZ. Thanyou for recommending that I ask for further tests. I will ask about those .Nurse just said she understands why other DN I saw put me on gliclozide to see the effects on my BG.. Its all a little confusing but it seems she thinks me going on insulin would save me a lot of heartache not having to go down the road of trying this, that, the other drug only to delay the inevitable ..so more or less to fasttrack to tuhe insulin( and begining to feel well andenergetic again)-thats how I took it anyhow. Im doing low carb ,walking for excercise etc .. but still have high readings:( .TBH I will be glad of a little relief from such a bloody strict diet...especially when all the effort is getting me nowhere fast :(! From my understanding if I am type 2 and insulin resistant then the insulin I will be injecting wont have an effect and I will just end up going on the meds again ,nothing lost. Im hoping I got this all right .DN was very knowledgeable and very caring and I trust her..She was empathic enough of my situation and feelings to say she wont be insulted in the least if I want to try different drugs but her instinct is I am type 1 or type 1 and 1/2 .. but if I decide to not go insulin route she will get me appointment with doc fast. I am posting this as I am very grateful to get any thoughts ,advice or just to put my experience out there so others may gain something from it :) x

I think most of the Type 1/1.5s in a similar situation report feeling so much better once they were put on insulin. Maybe @Daibell could help as I believe he went through something similar.

BTW, if you go on insulin there are various types of insulin and dosing schedules. For T1s, the recently updated NICE guidelines say people should be offered a basal/bolus regime that involves both long acting insulin, and short acting insulin that is adjusted for each meal. Personally, from what I have read, my hunch is that this regime is good for anyone needing insulin and needing to avoid weight gain. Other regimes seem to have people eating more carbs to meet the insulin dose, while this regime works the opposite way, by allowing you to reduce both carbs and, importantly, insulin.

Ah thanks guys for replying ,I really appreciate your prompt replies! :) I would love to hear about @Daibell or others experiences of similar to what I am going through @Indie51...Thanks also @CatladyNZ I will put that to her .:) She will love me,haha..God love her..drive her bonkers with questions :)!

Sorry forgot to say levels are mostly eights, nines, tens.

Same thing happened to me, I was treated as a T2 for 2 weeks until the GAD test results came back. I went straight on high exercise low carb regime after the first T2 diagnosis so didn't notice any difference when starting insulin , other than it was painful at first.

@Sobeit , as a T1, those levels are very much lower than one would expect a T1 to show with (as a T1 you would be producing very little insulin and tending towards the high teens typically) which is why the HCPs will be a little confused. @LucySW can give you an indication of what she found when diagnosed as T1.5, but you really need the GAD and C-Peptide tests to truly work out what you are.

Shouldn't a doctor/consultant being diagnosing your type and not a nurse? I would be insisting on a proper diagnosis and GAD/C-Peptide tests. It's not fair to be left uncertain.

Thanks for your replies @tim2000s and @Wurst Nurse wants me to call her tomorrow or Monday to let her know what I decide to do.I dont know about those tests mentioned.. Its just that I am feeling so tired much of the time. I could go on to try other tablets and will be given appointment with the doc asap or will be going in to learn about injecting. Its just that I am a good few weeks diagnosed now ,on 120 mg of gliclazide SR which I take in the morning . My BG hasnt really gone down though since beginning the 3rd and 4th tablet and possibly its the low carb eating that has had an impact on my BG rather than the gliclazide at all..

She is the specialist diabetes person .Think from what I can gather Im bordering on type 1,type 1 1/2... Its more or less her instinct that I could do with insulin .She will be running it by the doc.Oh Im frustrated and confused.

Thanks @pinewood for your reply. What are the GAD /c peptide tests ?

Just looked up about GAD .It says antibdies will show up in 75 % of people with type 1 but cant be conclusive to say you have to have antibodies to be type 1. Anyway Im not sure if I have had that tested or not. I have had bloods taken just not sure if that was one of the things tested for.

How were you diagnosed and what were you like leading up to the diagnosis health wise ?

Typically a type 1 is sudden onset so within a few days becoming very unwell, thirst, peeing a lot, weight loss, thrush, lethargic and 'pear' breath, before I had any tests done, my doctor knew immediately I was type 1, although I was suffering for a while before with other symptoms, so if I'd had my blood glucose checked in the months leading up to the sudden onset stage I am sure they would of shown I was running high. So knowing how you were diagnosed and under what circumstances may indicate what your diagnosis is however as Pinewood has suggested the doctors can do gad and c peptide tests to determine for certain.

Thanks for replying @Juicyj . I presented to my doc origionally with bladder infection. She checked BG which was very high.. So I followed up with fasting bloods which was 16.6 reading.I had been feeling extremely tired, weak , bladder infections on and off over last few years/ and pressure sensations in bladder at times ,continual thrush, thirst, peeing etc.Aches/ pains though not sure if thats related(will be seeing doc about that too shortly) and sleep issues!

According to HBA1C test my bloods had been averaging at 14 / 15 for 3 months pre being diagnosed as type 2.
