Reactive Hypoglycaemia

I wanted to ask actually I have my GTT on Tuesday and wondered what food I should have in my bag in case things start to go wrong. I don't want to pass out. Xx

You want a few carbs, then a good hefty portion of protein and fat.

In your place, i would have a small portion of a carb you know you will enjoy (biscuit? Choc bar?) to stop the drop fast. Knowing my body's reaction, i would go for a snickers bar. It is 27 g carbs, some fast, some slow. That may be far too much for you. Or too little.

Then i would follow it with a BIG meal of something like a Full English, a roast dinner. Hospital canteens often serve these all day, dont they? If i was limited to what was in my bag, or the ward fridge, i would stuff cheese, cold meat, bags of nuts, an entire tin of tinned salmon, smothered in helmans...

The protein will then catch you when your bg starts to drop after the carb snack, then the fat helps to slow the protein down, and stops any carb cravings.

It is the most elegant 're-entry' i have found, so far. Lol.

The alternative is a carb feeding frenzy, high/low swings and 3 days of misery.

They will want to give you glucose! Or a sandwich!!!!!
But ask for something like a biscuit, plain like rich tea!
Have a cuppa! You won't pass out!
Do please relax and enjoy it! It sounds daft but you there for hours!

Yeah its usually after a meal or even a banana, so many foods im cutting out. Yeah hypothyroid tsh normal every time. I keep asking for my t4 and t3 even when they tested vitD and everything else they didn't. Its convincing those gps.

TSH is a pointless test. You should look at maybe a private test if docs won't do it. Have you looked at tpauk they have amazing info and will really help you xx

Thanks Nosher. It's a two hour one and at my gPs so I need to be prepared as they won't have much to give me I wouldn't have thought. I have mentioned that I am anxious about it xx

A two hour won't do much, it will see how you spike, but that's about it! Have you had the prolonged test yet?
There's not much to it! Honest, it is easy and they make you relaxed.
It is a fasting test?
There is no need to be anxious, I've had quite a few.

Just read bruns post and after the two hours, which you shouldn't hypo have a low carb fry up, you will deserve it#!
If you don't eat afterwards you will hypo if you are RH. Bloody glucose! (Yuk!)

Yes it's a fasting test then I go in at 8am and have initial blood drawn them the glucose and another test at 10.00am. I will take my test kit and see how I get on myself by taking more regular readings

Make sure they do a pre fasting test before the glucose is drank!
Then every half hour at least.
Record the results and let us know.

Best wishes (again)!

Brun and Nosher have sorted the "what to eat" question, but wanted to say I hope all goes well on Tuesday.

Are they arranging a prolonged test as well to test for RH? x

Thanks all. Not yet. I suspect I will be referred to a specialist after this. Xx

Weird one tonight I made a Thai curry with pork aubergine and coconut milk and served it with cauli rice it was delicious and I ate it quite quickly (forgot my golden rule - slow down and chew each mouth full) anyway I started to feel odd straight after so took my blood after fifteen mins 5.9 after 45 mins 6.4 so I wouldn't have thought this is the issue. Maybe it is blood pressure again as I ate quickly. Anyway I now have Tummu ache so who knows!!

Thanks I am on my detox now so hope I get through. I had a coyo half an hour ago to get me through x

Weird question I know but do you all
Not brush your teeth before. GTT? I am guessing the toothpaste would affect the result even a bit

Omg @Linagirl i should have remembered this days ago! I am so sorry.

Because when we eat low carb, our body adjusts, and reduces the number of enzymes we produce, we are less able to cope with carbs - because we have fewer enzymes.

And it takes a few days of normal carb eating, to 'wake the enzymes up'. It is known as the last meal effect - where our body habitually expects to cope with what we had over the last few days.

So, you will be going into your OGTT with downgraded enzymes - assuming you have been low carbing over the last few days?

Going into an OGTT with downgraded enzymes will result in delayed insulin release.
But i don't know how this will affect an RHer.

Low carbers are advised to eat normal levels of carbs (whatever they are!) for several days before the test. But most medical professionals don't know this - and probably wouldn't know their patients are low carbing anyway.

I am sorry, but i didn't remember this early enough to tell you.

I suppose now you face the choice: cancel tomorrow, reschedule and eat carbs for a week beforehand, or go through with it, in the knowledge that your insulin response will be that of a LC RHer - but i honestly don't know what that effect will be.

I'm sure that I read a thread once about the amount of sugar used in toothpaste!
To be honest, I'm not sure, but I wouldn't think it would make that much difference!
Your worrying over nothing, really!
It will soon be over and you'll be laughing at yourself, because it is not bad at all! Or are you anxious about the diagnosis?

I asked my consultant about this after I read this soon after my first OGTT.
He said, that it wouldn't compromise the test, maybe he doesn't know, but I've always fasted and never upped my carbs! In fact my endocrinologist insisted I stay on very low carbs!

I had significantly reduced my carb intake before my first GTT and my results put me in the diabetic range. On my prolonged OGTT I had increased my carb intake and my result only put me in the pre-diabetic range. My Consultant told me that carb intake prior to the test will affect the result.
