I wanted to ask actually I have my GTT on Tuesday and wondered what food I should have in my bag in case things start to go wrong. I don't want to pass out. Xx
You want a few carbs, then a good hefty portion of protein and fat.
In your place, i would have a small portion of a carb you know you will enjoy (biscuit? Choc bar?) to stop the drop fast. Knowing my body's reaction, i would go for a snickers bar. It is 27 g carbs, some fast, some slow. That may be far too much for you. Or too little.
Then i would follow it with a BIG meal of something like a Full English, a roast dinner. Hospital canteens often serve these all day, dont they? If i was limited to what was in my bag, or the ward fridge, i would stuff cheese, cold meat, bags of nuts, an entire tin of tinned salmon, smothered in helmans...
The protein will then catch you when your bg starts to drop after the carb snack, then the fat helps to slow the protein down, and stops any carb cravings.
It is the most elegant 're-entry' i have found, so far. Lol.
The alternative is a carb feeding frenzy, high/low swings and 3 days of misery.
