Basal requirement has doubled in 3 months. Is this normal?

Thanks all. She eats low carb, maybe 50 grams a day (below 30grams is keto).

Basal requirement has doubled in 3 months. Is this normal?

Thanks all. She is 12 so puberty will hit soon. Is 30 units per day common at this age? We don't find our diabetes team very helpful. "things vary" is the type of response we get to our questions.

Do you take statins? Do you know why?

I'm late to this topic. I had some bad stats for cholesterol and arterial inflammation so the doctor tried pushing them on me. I declined. After the covid episode my trust in doctors is severely impaired. I'm middle aged but relatively fit. I have since started taking nattokinase daily, and for...

Basal requirement has doubled in 3 months. Is this normal?

My child's daily basal requirements have doubled from 15 to 30 units over the course of three months. This seems quite a lot compared to her body weight (35 kg) and I'm a bit alarmed about how quickly the requirement has increased. Yet, her sugar levels often take off during the night and are...

    travel insurance for newly diagnosed

Hi, My child was diagnosed with T1 just shy of 1 year ago. We're trying to find travel insurance online and there is a question that asks 'have you been admitted to hospital in the last year with your condition?' Well, she was admitted with diabetic ketoacidosis to hospital a year ago upon...

    Low carb and insulin insensitivity

Hi, (I'm carrying on this from a different thread as it fits better under this category.) My 10 years' old daughter has Type 1 and we do low carb (not quite keto, she has about 50g - 60g of carbs a day). That has worked pretty well so far in controlling blood sugar levels. But recently we've...

    low carb/keto and insulin ratio

Hi, we've increased the carb intake a little bit over the last few weeks, and also increased the basal. Since then, her sugar level had been fairly stable, but recently her carb ratio changed again (aargh!). Maybe to do with her growth hormones. Her sugar level rises in the evening, which...

    low carb/keto and insulin ratio

Thanks very much to everybody, Paulaah in particular. We're doing ok, just frustrated with the goal posts moving all the time! My daughter and the rest of the family are enjoying our diet well enough and don't really miss the carbs. We have low carb bread and cakes as well as the usual meat and...

    low carb/keto and insulin ratio

Thanks, that's helpful but I'm confused about some bits. I did mean 1.0 and it was just before dinner. Given that she does eat low carb it isn't surprising that she should have elevated ketones, i.e. nutritional ketosis. (DKA not a concern as her blood sugar levels are under such tight control)...

    low carb/keto and insulin ratio

Hi, Yes, we have the strips (bloodtest not urine). Today, for example, it was testing at 1, which is light nutritional ketosis. We did ask the pediatric doctor about DKA and the doctor said it is very unlikely to go into DKA without also having an elevated blood glucose levels. Do you agree or...

    low carb/keto and insulin ratio

Thanks both for taking the time to provide this detailed advice/input. Food for thought. With the higher carb in your diet did you manage to keep your blood sugars within 4-7 or did they shoot up after the meal? We did give her a diet with about 100g carb per day for the first couple of...

    low carb/keto and insulin ratio

To follow up, has anybody doing low carb experienced their insulin ratio shooting up like this? Is 3 carbs per insulin normal for a T1 child? It would be great if somebody could share their experiences.
