Endobarrier being fitted in a week.

Hi all,
I was accepted by University Hospital Southampton for the Endobarrier research. I will be starting my liquid only diet on Monday (20th June) for the device to be inserted on the following Monday. I will have this for 12 months and on the trial for a further 12 months for monitoring. Along with the endobarrier I will get specialist help from dieticians for the full 2 years.

Has anyone else had this fitted and how have you got on? Do you have any advice? What do others think of the trial? I understand the trial will be no longer taking others on within a month, as they will have their full quota.

Good luck, I'm a bit jealous.

I've followed the research on gastric bypass for type 2 diabetes very carefully, and I'm a big fan of Rubino, who seems to have proved conclusively that most diabetics see blood sugars normalise quickly after a bypass, and before any weight loss.

There was some recent very persuasive research in rats, showing that after a bypass, their ileum doubled in size, and seemed to become a new glucose guzzling organ, massively reducing insulin resistance. This seems to be because nutrient-rich food hits the ileum directly. The Endobarrier would seem to do the same job, as it prevents any digestion in the duodenum and jejunum.

My only concern is that from what I have read online, the endobarrier must be removed after a year..........is that right? If it works well, then boy are you going to miss it!

Yes you're correct, the device will be removed after 12 months. And yes the do expect my levels to raise, but only slightly. Along with the weight loss I should see, I'm hoping that it'll allow me to control by less medication or indeed diet only. Part of the trial is to see how my body changes over the 12 months to deal better in the time after.

Update:
I'm now starting my 7th day of my liquid diet of 5 fortsips (although I've not used all 5) and a bowl of soup a day. I have lost 10lb and so far I've not found it too difficult. That said I still have another 2 weeks of no solid food.
Tomorrow I'll have the endobarrier device inserted. I've been told to expect stomach cramps for the first few days. I'll put an update after tomorrow.

All went well thank you, just a little bit of discomfort, but I think that's more down to filling me with air. Also have a bit of a sore throat. On good pain killers and a couple of other drugs to stop stomach cramps and nausea.

There were 5 people having the same procedure on the same day. Have to say the staff at Southampton Hospital were great. Couldn't have been nicer people.

Please let us know how you get on. I do think that this is the future for diabetes care. The holy grail is to mimic these effects in a non-surgical way, so that somehow food is not absorbed in the duodenum or jejunum, and just in the ileum, but that may be a long way off.
