Hi I am in need of some desperate help, I am trying to get me C1 driving entitlement back on my driving licence which means I can drive up to a 7.5ton vehicle, the DVLA removed it without me knowing and I need it back due to my job! They sent me a D4 medical form out which I returned with the medical I had with my local GP which is fine but now they have sent another form in which I have to get acreport done with a hospital diabetic consultant! The problem is I do not have a hospital consultant as I get all my diabetic reviews done at my local GP diabetic surgery, I rang the DVLA and told them this but they just won't listen and say this report must be done by a hospital consultant even though I don't have one! I have rang the hospitals and even BUPA and this is not something the consultants do and they have never heard of this report that the DVLA are asking for and neither has my local GP's! I have even tried to find a hospital consultant who would do this privately and I would pay for the service but nobody does this type of thing and have never heard of it! All the report us us a tick sheet with a hospital stamp at the end! The DVLA have been really unhelpful and just won't listen to me when I try to explain what the situation is, it is disgraceful the way they are treating me! Can anyone help me with this situation as u have hit a brick wall and have run out if ideas! Im desperate as if I can't get my entitlement back I will have to lose my job!! I have even asked if I cud get transferred back to the hospital from my local doctors but as there is nothing wrong with my diabetes I can't get transferred back to a hospital consultant!! Please help I'm desperate!! Thanks Paul..

People who are touchy.......feign indignation at the slightest thing. Hypocrites, bullies and cowards.
The current verifiable information from the DVLA website is this:

A Guide for Drivers with Insulin Treated Diabetes who wish to apply for C1/C1E Entitlement

Drivers may apply for or renew their entitlement to categories C1/C1+E to drive small lorries with or without a trailer.

They may also be eligible to renew category C1E, to drive small lorries with a combined weight of 12 tonnes, if they have passed category CE, although this does not apply if they have previously held CE (102).
They will not be entitled by law to hold Category D1 (Minibuses

Qualifying Conditions you must meet
They must have had no hypoglycaemic attacks requiring assistance whilst driving within the previous 12 months.

They will not be able to apply for category C1 or C1E entitlement until their condition has been stable for a period of at least one month.

They must regularly monitor their condition by checking their blood glucose levels at least twice daily and at times relevant to driving. We advise the use of a memory chip meters for such monitoring

They must arrange to be examined every 12 months by a hospital consultant, who specialises in diabetes. At the examination the consultant will require sight of their blood glucose records for the last 3 months.

They must have no other condition, which would render them a danger when driving C1 vehicles.

They will be required to sign an undertaking to comply with the directions of doctors(s) treating the diabetes and to report immediately to DVLA any significant change in their condition.

Those are the conditions you MUST comply with. Other Diabetic's have managed to arrange such things and it is YOUR responsibility to arrange this by whatever means. Even if you have to pay.

I am very surprised that your GP and also Consultant's do not know about this condition which is in the DVLA guidelines.......it is common knowledge to those who deal with such things where I am treated ?

Hi I am aware of the guide lines as I have the copy that the DVLA have sent me, how can I get 2 see a hospital consultant if I am not registered with one? My GP can't transfer me as there is nothing wrong with my diabetes! I have tried ringing my last consultant who I was with some 6 years ago but was told by his secretary that I wouldn't be able to get transferred back if there was nothing wrong with my diabetes which there is not! I'm really struggling with this as nobody seems able 2 help me!

Glad that you are aware of what is required. Like I said, it's a strange one and something you need to discuss with both your GP and possibly the DVLA medical section. Maybe they have a list of people.

Your GP should be able to sort something out for you........if he wishes too that is ! :( He doesn't have to transfer you, he can refer you easily, especially as it is to comply with the rules which he should know....... :( It seems that maybe he is not being that helpful....... :(

We don't make the rules and as I say, others have done it so get talking to people who should be able to help.

The guidelines have been in place for some time and you are the first that I have seen having difficulty ??

Have you spoken to other GPs at the practice? Last time a GP said no to something I asked for I just made an appointment to see another one, who said yes. Some doctors just have 'issues' with certain things I think.

Hi I have managed to get an appointment with a diabetic consultant on the 16th February, does anyone know what the procedure will be when I see the consultant regarding the process of getting my form filled in and how long it may take?
