So then, you believe the glucose spikes are what's causing the damage?

I can't say because I'm not an expert. I can say that in the 21 years since diagnosis I have had many spikes and I have no doubt that my diagnosis, discovered by accident, where my BG was 13 several hours after eating anything, was well after my BG first became elevated. I have slight neuropathy in my feet and that's about it. Your symptoms are much greater than just your feet and why I suggest seeing a doctor, which I read you are now doing.

I'm 6-foot-4 and weighed 81KG when diagnosed with T2D 1.5 years ago.

. . . . . . . . I am today between 69KG and 70KG. This is still a healthy BMI, but only just; it hovers on the edge of "underweight."

I was quoting from one of the many sites returned when googling. It does not take into account ethnicity or indeed where one lives.

I believe that the generic advice about weight/height is bogus. We each have our own individual body type.

In my case, being 6-foot-4 and 81KG was dangerous even though the conventional BMI figure was absolutely fine. For most of my adult life I was about 10KG lighter, then in the past decade or so it had increased. I went from my "normal" weight to something bad, even though it did not "register" as "bad" as far as my GP was concerned.

I could be completely wrong of course. It could be that even if I had remained rail-thin, I would have developed T2D anyway. Who knows?

I would only use it as a rough guideline. As I once heard somebody say "When my GP said I was borderline overweight, I suggested that I must therefore be borderline about right".

If you read the paper I linked for you it will reveal a strong statistical correlation. It doesn't mean that spikes will always cause neuropathic symptoms but it does show that risk is higher. Only a neurologist can determine your problem. Bouncing ideas on a forum only opens up possibilities garnered from personal experiences. Given your current state and rate of progression a professional diagnosis is in order. Don't stuff around. Get this seen to now.
Hope it works out well for you.

@damian6000 - I appreciate in many countries one can just drop into a pharmacy, choose and buy insulin, but who suggested what doses might work for you, in the circumstances you describe?

One way and another, you've been sort of playing fast and loose - with your self-confessed carb binges, the self medicating with insulin to cope with/facilitate further carb binges.

You really do need to see a Doctor about your symptoms, and disclose everything you are doing and taking, but as well as that, it really, I'm sure, be helpful to your overall health to work your way to a regime that reduces the binges and ditches the insulin, unless you are medically advised insulin is appropriate for you. Insulin is a powerful and potentially dangerour hormone/drug and not to be meddled with, in my view.

Be careful.

Hi @damian6000.
Please keep your doctor's appointment, but if this has been progressing over 4 yours ,and with the uncertainty of what your diabetes status is and what its treatment should be, perhaps see a doctor who is best, and better qualified, to sort this out.
For skin problems combined with nerve problems may be a physician is the first port of call specialist-wise, to sort this out.
Seeing such a person is best not delayed.
Best Wishes on a diagnosis soon.
