Type 2 diabetic with a sweet tooth. I sure hope artificial sweeteners are safe. I drink flavored sparkling water with sucralose and bake with erythritol. I have been hearing it is bad for gut biome. Don' t know what to think. Right now I concentrate on my glucose and they do not affect me negatively.

I've been using sweeteners for over 50 years without any discernable bad effects. Definitely no bad effects on my blood sugar levels.

I use to work as a nurse, specialising in treatment and assements of adults with learning dificulties, Many were double incontinent. We use to have regular yearly training as well as smaller updates with the incontinence nurses, to keep us up to date with changes in the trusts dispensing of products etc. And at each one and to include the visits from community incontinent teams, they always stated that we should not use artifishal sweetners, as this causes the patients to urinate more frequently, and that a lot of them allowed here for public use were banned in other countries as proven to cause cancer, and other problems in the urinary system. There main factor was to stop us useing too many incontinence pads etc, as the patients would pass uring very often, and we didnt like the thought that they were sitting on wet pads (even if they had a protective covering not very nice) so we would change more often. so if they were saying that and they did give us evidence to proove what they were saying about it, and thats been since the 90s, what does it do now with all the processing it goes through in modern day. Also we changed to what we called natural sweetners, from plants, but even they have to go through processing, and what do they use in the processing, man made chemicals. so even they have a chane of molicule change'sthat can also over time do damage. Im dibetis 2, and its high, but i use suga, as its natural and try to get drinks that dont have these added sweetners , but they are hard to come by as nearly all of them contain it. but i get a lot of thirst, and dont drink more than one cofee a day and no tea, but i found that the bottled water with fizz in it works to quench the thirst, beter than still water, and now i use no added sugar dilute, or pure juice in the water. As i remember from my days as a nhs nurse before retirement what i was taught, synthetic sweetners do damage. but these days there are a good number of more natural sweetners, and i have read that one of the synthetic ones has been given a new name, to confuse people , as they already are aware of the damage it can cause, it makes it easier for it to sell the products its in. why cant this country ban stuff that has been proven to cause cancers from our food stuff, as its added to lots of foods these days, it could help the need for medcal treatments here in the uk, and save lives. people with diabetis, have to be so carefull so why cant the goverment help us and their pockets too. with the NHS needing to save money, start with the causes of ilnesses like artifishal sweetners in everything, especially kids sweets, as they eat them all their lives, same with some colourants and flavouring,

First of all, I'd like to say I'm a little disappointed to get an email from Diabetes.co.uk highlighting posts which are SIX YEARS OLD! But since I'm here now, I might as well add my tuppence worth.

I have ALWAYS had a sweet tooth from being a youngster and it's obviously a hard thing to change. After being diagnosed with Type-2, I stopped buying sugar at all and I replaced it with Candarel Powder for sprinkling on my Porridge and I buy Silver Spoon sweeteners for my hot drinks. I chose both these products based purely on taste (or rather no 'after-taste').

I use these products as sparingly as possible but will not give them up completely unless the products start to be issued with formal, official warnings based on proper research and evidence (from a Government body), just like cigarettes, etc. I'm not going to listen to the ramblings of "Pete down the pub". Believing is not knowing!

Having said that, Rose_Eadie's comments on 'Frequent Urination' has got me thinking, because I cannot get through a night without 2 or 3 visits to the loo for a pee. I was going to book a Doctor's Appointment to see if it was anything to do with my prostate (I'm 62). If the prostrate is not enlarged, then I might take a month off sweeteners to see if it makes a difference.

The original post may have been 6 years old, it's just the thread has bounced back into life.
Gave up porridge with T2 dx.
Was 62 when dx with PCa, removed, though didn't have any problems with water works during the night. Good luck on that front.
