Hi all, I am intrigued to know what tools, if any, people use to help accurately count carbs e.g. do you use Apps like Carbs & Cals? or tools from DSN? How useful do people find the tools when managing their diabetes?

I flip flop between an app & just using the internet in general. Are you looking for an app you could use to calculate your carbs? What do you use at the moment? I’m not T1 but T2 diet only so my need to count carbs may be different to yours

Hey - I am interested in how people navigate the carb counting part - especially if you are going out for dinner etc. I have used carbs and cals and it is not always easy to get an accurate view of carb content - which is needed for the pump to calculate the amount of bolus required.

I'm on a pump too and I just wing it. I have accurate kitchen scales and the internet at home to keep my carb counting reasonably accurate there. It helps that I've been T1 for over 50 years and am good at mental arithmetic....

And I'm also relatively low carb (less than 100g a day).

When at home I am strict and accurate. Weighing food if needs be. Twelve years in I now know most of the food I eat and their values. I use a carbs and Cals book which I bought at the start of this journey if I need it. I Ask Alexa also these days, and refer to a large dog eared chart which is on the back of a kitchen cupboard. It was one of the first tasks I set myself to make my life easier all those years ago. If eating a variety of foods I might jot things down on a bit of paper, but mostly do a tally in my head.
When eating out, like @EllieM I wing it, though without a pump. Before going I check any online sites the venue may have to enable a food choice. I prep my insulin pen after ordering and always wait until the food arrives in front of me. Plus I always inject at the table. People are hardly aware I’m doing it. Then when I reach home I look at the damage and sort it out if I’m too high. To be honest when first diagnosed I would get into a flap about going out as I felt out of control. But one meal out periodically incorrectly managed is not the end of the world in this daily toil.
