All starting again. On 1x40mg gliclazide and 2x500mg modified release Metformin. Haba1c at 45 in July25 when drugs reduced. Have lost over 2 stone in weght down to 16.75 stone. Daily prick test fasting 5.6 -6.1 mmol and new bloods to be taken 05/02/26 calculate will be Hba1c of 49.
Diabetic assistant phoned today to delete Gliclazide completely because of risk of hypo. In 25 years have had one which I detected ad chewed a couple of glucose and remedied.
Prick test daily to comply with DVLA. Still attending Eye Infirmary to monitor left eye damaged when Dapagliflosin failed to deal with blood glucose and it spiralled to daily fasting 9.0mmol for 3 months before back to Gliclazide. Infirmary pleased with eye but need to continue to monitor.
Believe loss of Gliclazide will take me back, Metformin unlikely to maintain present level on its own. Anyone any views?

Cheers Bill

My view is why fix what ain’t broken! I take one low dose med and eat low carb, this keeps my HbA1c consistently non diabetic. I was asked at my last review if I wanted to stop the med. I declined and luckily they agree. Some people may want to go med free but if I was in your position I would stand my ground.

If you feel that would be too much of a big step ask your doctor to reduce the dosage.
Your recent results are very good and you are now at the recommended levels of good control that could mean with good dietary control, the time to rethink your meds.
But do discuss it with your GP.

I was able to change from the planned telephone discussion, and insisted on a face to face meeting with the diabetic nurse. Not eady because the practice uses the telephone for many patient discussions irrespective of apparent need.

The latest target for HbA1c was to be 53 then 58. I was at 48 in January 26. It looks like NHS guidelines are changing.

At the recent meeting I saw Diabetic Nurse, and produced my Contour Plus data which shows good control but because Gliclazide dose reduced I calculate has increased to 50. Still good but since the HbA1c shows the average for previous year it can effectively be out of date and not reflect recent changes. My daily prick testbis my safety. Upshot was 30 minute face to face and on my NHS record, good control and keep taking Gliclzide and 2x500 mg Metformin.

I also use a private Podiatrist every 8 weeks to check feet nerve and blood pressure since practice looks at feet annually at best. They now want to see her results since it saves the surgery!
