Do you think there is enough about Type 1 Diabetes.

Just asking the question is there enough information out there about Type 1 Diabetes because I always get people mistaken me to other Type of Diabetes, even though on my medical records it says I am a Type 1 since 2003 and shows my only treatment I can have which is using Insulin. I have had professional people make this mistake about my Diabetes as well.

Dose not seem to be that much information about Type 1 Diabetes on the TV or in the Doctors surgery waiting rooms.
 
I feel there isn’t enough awareness out there fur type 1. At first I just put sinr of my symptoms turn the other health conditions that carry similar symptoms and also there’s still a lot of stigma about as well

I think there is a fair bit of info out there.
Especially from other T1s sharing the condition on all forms of media, even info on new associated tech..

I have to admit the portrayal of T1 in the movies is laughably wrong..
 
I think there is more information out there than there used to be, but I have always happily educated the people around me about basic T1 stuff and haven't felt stigmatised. (I think there is more stigma re T2).

You have to remember that possibly 90% of diabetics are T2, so it's not surprising that non diabetics get confused...

And yes @Jaylee , you have to cry or laugh about the portrayal of T1 diabetes in films. (Con Air anyone ? )

I was thinking con-air.
There was a T1 girl in an 80’s movie called Warlock? Who was the only character I can think of using the gear she carries to an advantage.. (without any spoilers.) ;)

The main character in A Spy Among Friends was T1. His condition played absolutely no part in the story, so no idea why it was included. Anyway, he has tea and buns with colleagues - camera zooms in on his eating the buns as being "significant".....and sure enough he has to leave the room and rush to the loo, where he spends some time staggering and falling around in confusion and bouncing off the walls before he's finally able to inject himself with insulin. When he does, he recovers instantly.

So the message sent is if diabetics eat buns/sugar they will "hypo" and might pass out, and if so, the thing to do is to inject insulin. Either they don't know how wrong they are, or they do know and don't care because it's more dramatic.
 
I'm not a tv watcher but it would be nice if a major character in a popular show would be diagnosed with it. I might be wrong and there could already be one.
 
I went through a brief phase thirty years ago when I watched Neighbours. I have a vague memory of a new character being suspected of being a drug addict, and it turned out they had diabetes...?

Been diagnosed since I was a toddler, all I hear every year is “We’Ll HaVe A cUrE iN fIvE yEaRs”

I actually got caught injecting at college & the rumour went round I was “Renton from trainspotting.”
Then got this rep as a bad lad..
Went to a reunion decades later.. Got told I looked well. I responded it was “down to the drugs..”

Oh? Yep, I never gave up the insulin… :p

As for more inclusion of Type 1 in TV or the movies.
Usually the only time I see Type1 diabetics is when AI or an assassin hacks in to their insulin pump to kill them.
Not sure I want to trust any part of public awareness and education to the movies.

Seeing is believing: I believed everything in JFK for years.

Just remembered one - "The late Nancy Irving" . She has an extremely rare blood type and is kidnapped after a fake death to be a living blood bank to a rich man with same type who needs regular transfusions. In the end she injects herself with an overdose of insulin to kill him as well as herself during a transfusion....

Hi @Jaylee there are loads can't remember which series and episode precisely, I think it is just a recurring plot device just as potential pandemics were in so many shows for years.

Googled it and came up with this for movies if your interested. Insulin Movies

Again the google search highlighted the HACK E.R episode of CSI:Cyber. I.ve never seen it but the killer hacks in to insulin pumps. I think this trope is popular because experts have come out and said it is possible, in theory. :bookworm:

Although there are no recorded cases of this ever happening in real life. ;)
