Hi, @Helenf72
Welcome
Sorry you are having a tough time. I would be challenging the advice of ‘fine’ when you feel far from fine, and that is a long time to wait to see a nurse when you feel so ill. Crohns will also make you feel bad if you have a flare up.

What medication are you taking? I ask because you could reduce the carbs in your diet as long as you are not on medication that could cause hypos. Lower carb diet can help to reduce blood glucose readings.

If your doctor or diabetes nurse will not see you before the appointment in October, perhaps you could use NHS 111 service to request an appointment for out of hours advice as it is the weekend, and your GP surgery is likely to be closed until Monday.

Hi @Helenf72 and welcome to the forum. I agree with @Pipp that your readings are not what I consider ‘fine’ either. Do you know what your last HbA1c was? If your levels are regularly 9 - 15 then your HbA1c should indicate to your GP, you are not fine, especially as you aren’t feeling well. I keep my levels non diabetic with a small dose of Tirzapetide (Mounjaro) and a low carb diet. Tell us what, meds you take if you are comfortable doing so, then we can help you further.
If you don’t take advice over the weekend I would push firmly for an earlier appt at your surgery on Monday.

Welcome.
Sorry to hear that you are feeling unwell.
Like you I wouldn't be happy with blood levels that high and feeling rotten all the time.
Is there a chance you can see another doctor.

Hi Helen. My GP would be happy with those numbers, he wasn't worried about me having 15-29 mmol! He did taken action when my HbA1c shot up to 109 though. It's currently 53 but that's because I went back on Pioglitazone, Tirzepatide & Glimepiride.
Your pin-prick readings are just a guide, my GP will rarely make any changes unless they have an up-to-date HbA1c reading. What's your HbA1c? Our surgery considers 57 and below to be acceptable management.

I wouldn't be at all happy with those readings if they're consistent. The problem with the NHS targets for blood glucose management is that they accept quite abnormal levels of blood glucose as being "good" and something to aim for. So assuming your doctor is using those, you will be told you're doing well. As a T2 diabetic, I would strongly disagree.

Incidentally, I had severe symptoms when my BG was only slightly out of range, but was repeatedly told that my diabetes symptoms weren't "diabetes symptoms". The system of QoF payments encourages some very flawed thinking in UK clinicians.
