Hello i have type 2 diabetes if i get a high glucose it is normaly about 17.1 Tonight i checked my sensor reading at teatime it was only 5.5 which is excellent for me as i never go below 10.0 ! I felt tired but only because i did not get much sleep lastnight i dozed off for just over 1 hor and got woken with high glucose alarm i checked it and it was 18.9 it went up to 19.0 then 19.8 I have had my background insulin already i also had 14 units of my insulin for eating food, i only had slices of bread with very thin ham.. i got a shock at how sugars have risen it has been over 3 hours and my sugars are coming down a couple of points then going back up then down one point , is there anything i can do to get it to a bit lower level please? just feeling a bit on edge with it . Thank you for reading .

Thanks @KennyA

How are you @noidea21 ? Have your sugars come down now? Are you on fixed doses of your fast acting insulin or do you carb count?

Sliced bread eaten with not much fat or protein is definitely one thing which can raise my blood sugars quickly and very high. On the rare occasion I eat ordinary bread I do need quite a bit of insulin. But other things can cause an unexpected rise in blood sugar as well, like an infection brewing (even a common cold), or stress, and indeed lack of sleep.

In your position last night I would take a small dose of my fast acting insulin to try and bring the levels down. It’s obviously important not to take too much though, and definitely best to discuss with your diabetic nurse in advance to see what they recommend for this type of situation. Different people will use different amounts and the type of insulin you use makes a difference as well.

If your levels are still very high this morning could you phone your diabetic nurse to see what they advise? If you don’t need to today I definitely recommend discussing it with them at your next appointment. Also if the levels had kept climbing beyond 20 best to call 111 for advice at the time.

We cannot advise as to insulin doses on here you are really best to speak to your diabetic nurse or Dr about that.
How long have you been using insulin and also bear in mind there can be other factors regarding high sugars. ill ness, weather, tired, mood etc
I don't have a sensor I do finger prick testing (may change soon) if I was you I would have checked with a finger prick test to

Thank you so much for reply ! My sugars have come back down today started to come down at 5am ! I have background insulin also fast acting but i am so reluctant to use extra units of fast acting as i do have hypo's normally early mornings ! I only ever eat 2-3 slices of Milk roll bread as i don't do well with carbs! i have called the diabetic nurses who will be calling me this afternoon ! i am just so relieved it is back down but i need to ask the nurse what to do if this happens again! as it really made me panic which definitely would not help matters ! I only had my appointment last week with consultant and things was as good as could be as even though sugars running around 11-13 in daytime the consultant said i am keeping control of them ! My consultant has changed since my last app but the doctor was so good and also asked me to still call nurses if i need too and i have an another app for 6 months! I have always had problems with medications as i am allergic to so many . Thank you so much for replying ,x

Thank you so much for reply ! My sugars are finally back to acceptable for me today ! I am very careful and very wary of increasing or reducing my insulin ! i would normally have phoned the nurses if i had the concerns as i did last-night but because of how late it was i was unsure what to do ! i was worried i know for sure! I can only think now it will be stress and lack of sleep as i have never known it go that high so sudden and carry on increasing i normally am very aware of my hypo's and know how to deal with them but the opposite did give me a bit of a scare i did have 3 extra units of insulin which i was told to do when i was on steroids a while ago and i had spikes of sugar but last night nothing helped . I had only had my breakfast yesterday morning porridge as i usually do i did not have lunch and only 3 slices of milk roll bread as there is very little carbs with very thin ham and cucumber for my tea so i knew it was nothing i had eaten as i am always careful what i eat. I do have a prick test also and did check it against my sensor readings which was the same reading ! Thank you so much for the reply i am sorry i was worried and panicked ! i am waiting for the nurse to call me so i know what to do if this happens again ! it just confuse me that i was fine but after falling asleep as i went so tired suddenly getting alarm for high sugar and it kept going up and i only was having sips of black weak tea as i was told before to sip water which i cant drink water so its black tea no sugar for me. Thank you again for your help . x
