Hey everyone!
Im nikki, in 21 and has been t1 for 13 years. Also have under active thyroid. I've always struggled with accepting and controlling my diabetes, specially since my mum passed suddenly when i was 16. I have found this forums to be very helpful to questions i am unsure of. I have always thought that the diabetes specialists are unsure of things (if you know what i mean) but i also think they do a grand job and do their best to help us, they just cant understand the full extent of diabetes unless they have it themselves.

Sorry to blab. The main reason i have started this, is to see if anyone else suffers with abscess/boils under the arm. I started getting them just over a year now and the first one had to be drained and i have had 5/6 more since, all treated with

Sorry pressed accidentally!
They have been treated with flucloxacillin.

I just wanted to see if anyone else suffers with these and any tips to prevent them etc would be greatly appreciated.

Thank ypu

I have folloculotis which sounds very similar and occurs anywhere on the body where hair grows. Particularly where clothing rubs or contacts skin.

Its also treated with antibiotics. Ask to see a skin specialist. A simple sesb will confirm it.

How well are your blood sugars controlled? If they're a bit high then this increases the risk of getting recurring boils/abscesses.

I've suffered many years from nasty boils, usually in my groin area. They're always treated with antibiotics - usually flucloxacillin until recently when that began to be ineffective.

Since getting better control of my sugars though, I've had far fewer boils!

It is fairly common to get them if you're diabetic.

I used to suffer with this under my left armpit. I have found only using an electric shaver under my arms and not using any soap or shower gel under my arms has kept this at bay for bout 4 years now :)))

Hi, im new here, so forgive the rambling. but was really interested reading this post, i suffered for over 4 years with recurring Abscess's in my groin, i ended up having an operation to remove it, great for 3 month's, then bang it grows in the crease on the other side of my groin, ive been treated again and again with stronger antibioptics, though i still suffer to this day 6 years after my op, intrestingly reading your post, it seems it could be a regular thing for some of us. I still cant get my readings into single figgures (makes me feel lifeless) i dont receive any helpfull advice from my doctor or the nurse i see about my diabetes, truthfully i feel really letdown by all of them, (i havent seen a specialist for over 8/9 years as his comment to me when my diabetes was well out of controll was 'ive got 1500 other pateints so if you cant be bothered why should I' ) i didnt and still dont understand a lot about diabetes, but hopefully with a LOT more work i will try to lower my readings and this problem might resolve itself. Thank you for more information in my 1st visit than years of suffering under my local health service.

Hiya, I've had t1 for 20 years now and last year(after 3 years of bulimia) developed diabulimia. As a result of constantly keeping my blood sugar high etc I developed abbesses on my groin and underarm. After weeks of gp visits I worked out it was Hidradenitis Suppurativa. This website (http://www.dailystrength.org/c/Hidraden ... port-group) really helped me understand the condition which definitely developed for me from messing up my immune system with the high blood sugars from the diabulima. After having been semi-recovered for 6 months I haven't had a boil since, and the scarring has reduced a lot. Hope this helps x

In relation to the original post: For what it's worth - and I'm not saying that it's necessarily the case here - there might be another, unrelated, reason for the problem. For some years now I've found I can't apply underarm deodorant (the type designed to stop you sweating) without getting painful, inflamed 'spots' in my armpits. Although they're often blind-headed, they do get red and angry-looking, and are usually very sore

If I stop using it the deodorant they go away and if I don't use it I never have a problem.

I am T2. Diagnosed just over 2 yrs ago. Approx 18 months ago I got a huge abscess under my armpit, 8 weeks of varying antibiotics and it was still there. Dr tried draining it in house and I ended up being hospitalised to have it surgically removed (the lump had taken over my whole armpit and was also invading the top quarter of my arm). 12 months of twice daily packing and it was perceived as done (although I kept getting lumps in the same place whilst packing was being done!) Drs wouldn't investigate and just kept saying it was all part of my "progressive degenerative disease" (my diabetes - hba1c 52!!) I still get the lumps every 6 weeks which are very large and painful and won't respond to antibiotics. They just get so big that after two weeks the original scar can't take the pressure and it bursts out, the packing then has to start again. The point of my post (sorry I know it's been long winded!) is that I told the Drs I was going to seek legal advice due to negligence, I was immediately refer to a dermatologist who confirmed hidranitus supperativa (nothin to do with diabetes)demand your Dr investigates!!
