Hello I'm new to the forum and have type 2 diabetes, regulated by diet. Any tips on whether it's curable by diet? Is it common to have problems walking? Is there any point going to GP? Finding it tricky to get an appointment there or at diabetes clinic.

not sure about it being curable by diet alone - there are those who believe it is though for sure - but it can certainly be managed by diet alone as I have been doing that now for almost 3 years. last A1c was 34 (5.3 in old money).

v low carbs and daily exercise. that's the key thing for me at least. exercise needs to be every single day.

good luck ..

Hi Jane and welcome.

I was diagnosed Type 2 a couple of months ago and ordered a glucose monitor straightaway.

I find it essential to show me which foods make my blood sugars spike.

Everyone is different and what makes me spike may not make yours spike.

I can't eat bananas anymore... or beetroot or wholemeal bread. I can eat wholegrain ( Burgen. £1 at Iceland at the moment)

I am using a Glucomen LX+ meter which you can order from the Glucomen website. I don't know how they manage to send out free meters but Glucomen,Abbot and Bayer all send out free monitors.

There is a 'request a meter' form to fill in which you can find usually on the home page of each website. The Glucomen has in my eyes to simplest lancer and pretty cheap lancets.

When you see your diabetic nurse ( do make an appointment ) she may or may not offer you a monitor and a prescription for strips and lancets. It's a postcode lottery I'm afraid. I am lucky to get both strips and lancets on prescription. I was so sure I wouldn't get a prescription I went ahead and bought both from E Bay. Each monitor has its own strips and lancets. When you get your monitor there will be an instruction on paper to give to your doctor or diabetic nurse. Then she will prescribe them for you.

Glucomen will send out your monitor in a couple of days usually. It puts you in control rather than letting Diabetes rule you.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

But please make an appointment to see your diabetic nurse.

Hi Jane
I'm also new to the forum this is my first post. I was first diagnosed Type 2 diabetic in June 2012, 6 months after a traumatic accident. I was lucky enough to have a specialist diabetic GP at my local practice. My high glucose levels were picked up at the dental hospital strangely and followed up by my GP who rang me to come in for a fasting test. They were 12.5 and a week later 10.0. It's been quite a year trying to get my head around it all. I was not able to get a meter or strips on prescription so had to buy my own but I would not be without them!
Although not posting since diagnosis I've found the forum posts a great comfort and a source of valuable information. So today I've taken the plunge and dived into the forum community for the first time........
