I think it sounds very promising. I do wonder how it's going to work though, and if I'd really trust it to 'switch on' when I needed it - and off when I didnt.

Personally, the best 'cure' for me would be the immune attack on my islets being stopped, and my own pancreas being able to control my blood sugar again. Didn't they find another pancreatic cell that could take over from the damaged beta cells? That kind of repair is what I'd like really. Not just ways of managing this tedious condition.

Why wouldnt you trust it? If it were to be approved all the testing would have been done, just imagine having to inject once then forgot about your condition for 24 hours, no finger pricking, no hypos, no injecting before meals

Because I find it hard to believe that an insulin could respond so closely to your body's needs and switch off and on no matter what you did or ate or were feeling. I imagine it may work for some people but possibly not others.

Yes, in theory it would be great, but I'm reserving judgement until I see it actually working in humans. So many magic answers to diabetes have proven to be not so good as we hoped. If this could work, then it'd be lovely, but I see many years of testing ahead as any malfunction in it would be potentially dangerous.

This fries my brain, it really does. How they are able to chemically modify insulin so that it is "off" when attached to protein and "on" when glucose attaches is thoroughly beyond me.

@azure - there are so many new and wonderful advances being promised and it's easy to be sceptical, however, the way I see it is that one of these great ideas we've been promised in the next decade will surely happen!!

I read of smart insulin today from another source http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/289255.php sounds promising but its a few years away from clinical trials but the idea is great, if it is successful they should be up for a nobel, there seems to be a new potential T1D cure coming out every week. Lets hope the momentum speeds up and at least one of them gets there soon. There is a danger that the wrong 'cure' is found and they take the foot of the gas on developing others that are possibly more suitable but i'd settle for smart insulin any day if it proves effective. They are working on a pro-biotic cure too http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/288813.php something worth keeping an eye on.

sounds great to me and has some parallels with another device I read about a while back. Some researchers had made a polymer that was sensitive to BG. The idea being that you had an implanted reservoir surrounded by this polymer. When BG drops, the polymer becomes impervious to insulin and when BG rise again the polymer becomes porous to insulin pretty much an artificial pancreas with no working parts and no need for complex algorithms to describe bological functions and interactions

The "technology" doesn't sound so very different from Viagra - i.e. it is specific and directed to a particular outcome. It sounds as if progress is being made. If it passes clinical trials thee would be no need to worry - and it would be very easy to check its effectiveness with blood tests.
