Hypos, rude people, ignorance and grey days.
Hiya, I have been on different types of insulin and these were the same. I do go to a diabetes specialist clinic which is where I got the information from. They are trying different things before metformin.
Why my diabetes must be so complicated! X

Hey Hol, as I said in my earlier post it looks like you have become resistant to your basal dose, contact your diabetes team to get this changed Levemir isn't working for you so changing over to Tribeca or Lantus should be your first call, can you call them today ? once they are aware they should be able to get you changed over quickly, so if you call today talk them through you daily doses and results, explain how your are feeling and your concerns over the high doses and high readings, this is consistent with your basal not working. I wouldnt recommend metformin as your basal should be your priority,

Let me know how you get on ;)

@Hollister, Have a look around the forum. There are a lot of threads on the subject of Metformin for Type 1s. It's used for Type 2s in the UK, but what it actually does is increase insulin sensitivity. If you can tolerate it - some people just can't, though it was fine for me - that is absolutely what you want.

Metformin has been around for years, and the evidence picture is that it is a very safe and useful drug. Some people hate it because it gives them gut side effects from hell. Just try it? And build up the dose SLOWLY.

I would love to be on Metformin again. Anything to keep insulin doses down, and it's safe.

Just look at past threads.

I've Ben on tribeca and lantus. Lantus gave me a rash, which was really weird, and of course it stings.
I can't remember why they changed me to levemir, but I think it's the only one that the only issue is the amount x

You sound exactly the same as me except my specialist nurse said I was very likely to be type 1.5. I'm on metformin too (1500 mg slow release a day) but have been told it will be insulin eventually. I was diagnosed 5 years ago this week and the medics are really surprised by how long I've gone without needing insulin. I think it's because I walk almost every day and never eat anything sweet unless I'm having a low.

Sounds a bit like me with some differences though: I was diagnosed in November 2014 as T2 and put on metformin. Then more tests came and this time I was told I am T1 with still some insulin of my own and told this can go on for a few months or even years (if I am lucky). HOWEVER, I was told to drop Metformin and start injecting insulin immediately (6 units of Lantus + 2 units of NovoRapid before meals). My doctor told me these doses are "ridiculous" and they indeed seem low compared to what many other people take.

Currently, I am trying to low carb with good impact on my BS levels but mixed results in my overall body's response.

Hello I've been type one diabetic for 18 months now and I am on metforin I don't inject I only use metforing now as my pancreas is still producing enough insulin. But in the future will be insulin independent and have to start injecting my doctor told me one patient lasted for years before he had to start injecting as a type one. I know it's strange
Sounds a bit like me, except my doctor advised me to start injecting right away to get used to life without insulin well in advance :(
