    Bill's Travels

Yes, we had it tough but it didn't seem so at the time. We were just playing the hand that life dealt us. There were also a lot of people who had it a lot worse than we did. And fortunately the concept of political correctness hadn't been formulated then - it would have been laughed to death...

    Starting to hit me.

Hi Becca - You are now at the lowest point for a diabetic. From here on, the only way is up. Don't think that there are foods you can never eat again. As a Type 2 you can eat almost anything, just in smaller quantities. Depending on your medication, you can even have a Big Mac and chips. Just...

    Bill's Travels

Love hearing your comments. Don't forget to remind me if I get to be a bore. Looking back on those wartime years I'm surprised that so many of us kids survived. We were a far greater danger to ourselves than the Luftwaffe ever was. London became a giant adventure playground for us, which was...

    Hana's stuffed peppers

That sounds delicious, Hana. My wife makes stuffed peppers but she uses a little cooked rice instead of bread. Each pepper contains so little rice that it is very low carb. I'll have to get her recipe. I usually do the cooking at home, but she prepares this dish so beautifully that I don't even...

    Chocolate???

Absolutely. That's what I go for. The highest percentage of cocoa solids you can find. And then only have one or two squares at a time. If you can make a bar last for a week you'll be eating chocolate with very low carbs, without having to do the artificial sweetener tango.

    Bill's Travels

I'm quite overwhelmed by the response to my memories. I never dreamed anyone would find my life interesting, but I have to confess that I'm glad to be proved wrong. Thank you, everyone. My next big journey was to Suffolk in 1944 when I was 7. Once again I was being evacuated as the V1s were...

    new doc.

Well done, Squirrel. Don't worry too much about the Chinese. Take the rice and the noodles in small quantities but try the dishes with shrimp, squid, meat and vegetables. Especially good are bean sprouts. I love Chinese so giving it up completely would be a tragedy for me.

    Bill's Travels

Many thanks for those kind comments. It's almost worth developing diabetes just to meet such nice people. Yes, Suzi, I've reached the age where I'm given the senior's discount without having to ask for it. As for the last time I was asked to prove my age to buy a bottle of whisky, why even Tesco...

    OMG whatever next!

Absolutely spot on, Dennis and Fergus - and what's more I have developed a vaccine to counter this virus. I'm calling it the low-carb diet.

    Bill's Travels

In response to overwhelming popular demand (well, two people at least) I have finally found the time to write as promised. Life has been a bit hectic this week with a dental appointment, blood test, endocrinologist visit, driving my wife to the ophthalmologist, and finally making the...

    California dreaming

Just two final points. I suspected I'd put on a bit of weight over the three months in Cal but when I got home I found it was only 2 kilos. I've now lost one of them and hope to have shed the other one (and hopefully a bit more) by Monday. And finally, in the whole time I was there I didn't hear...

I'm married to a grandmother and I chain her to the ironing board several times a week.

    Buckwheat

In Brittany last year I took to having a galette for lunch frequently and discovered that they are made from "blè noir" (black wheat). If you haven't had a galette in Brittany or Normandy let me say they are thin, lacy pancakes, blackish in colour and are served with a variety of fillings from...

What is a portion of wholewheat pasta that won't harm ?

I've been eating Dreamfields pasta for about 6 months now and haven't noticed any difference in taste between it and regular supermarket pasta. In fact, my wife says she prefers the taste to ordinary pasta. Also after a normal (large) helping of their pasta my BG stays pretty normal. And let me...

    California dreaming

Thank you, both. I'll happily write as long as you tell me if I'm becoming a bore. Perhaps we should call the thread "Gullible's Travels". Or perhaps not. Anyway, a few more reflections on life in the US of A. At first it used to irritate me that the price shown in shops and supermarkets...

    California dreaming

Suzi and Dennis - _Thanks for the kind words. Dennis, I haven't been to Nova Scotia but after your description I'll put it on my wish list. In fact, I haven't been to Canada at all, a hole in my travelling itineraries I really should do something to fill. I did make contact a couple of years ago...

    California dreaming

Our drive to Big Sur was out of this world. The weather was absolutely glorious with a temperature of 74, and the sea was calm. We drove down past Monterey and Carmel, over the Bixby Bridge to the River Inn where we stopped for lunch. We sat outside on the terrace and had a great meal...

    California dreaming

Thank you , Suzi. You're doing my ego a power of good. We're planning on a trip to Normandy in the Spring, depending on the weather. As we only live 10 minutes from the French border that's not such a stretch, but we love the Normandy and Brittany area and it will help keep my French up to...

    California dreaming

A couple of miles down Highway 1 is a small town called Seascape. The town grew up around a hotel-cum-holiday resort called (what else?) Seascape Resort which has a restaurant named Sanderlings. We decided to go down there for lunch yesterday and what a surprise we had. They have 3 specials on...
