HIT in the morning is best?

I'm sure many of you will have seen the BBC Horizon program where Michael Mosely sings the praises of HIT (High intensity Training). I wondered whether doing HIT first thing in the morning would be a good way to reduce early morning raised BG caused by the 'dawn syndrome'. Now I'm not a...

    What exercise?

I've been T2 for 10yrs and still don't take medication. I'm now 56yrs. I was diagnosed after putting on 10kg over a number of years of not doing a huge amount of exercise. This is relative mind you. Before the weight gain I was cycling 200-300 miles a week, running 10miles and going to the gym...

Low-carb, high cholesterol, wont take statins - help

Andy I was on Simvastatin and they didn't agree with me even in small doses. So negative was the effect (I still haven't recovered the lost strength and fitness I had) and so little do I now trust the medical 'industry' in respect of this, that I personally will not give statins another...

Low-carb, high cholesterol, wont take statins - help

Thanks Yorksman I do do a fair bit of exercise. 7-8hours a week, consisting of 3 runs (40-90minutes), 2 weights/circuits sessions, a cross-trainer session and often a walk too. I am though interested in 'when' to exercise. A sports coach would say don't exercise within 2 hours of eating...

Low-carb, high cholesterol, wont take statins - help

I came off statins a few years ago because they were playing havoc with my body. My muscles constantly ached and my athletic performance and strength dropped off a cliff. I was never checked in the year I was on them. However, even though I had such a bad response, the doc keeps trying to...

Are you hitting the 3 main diabetes targets?

I'm not hitting the total cholesterol although the breakdown and ratios are good. I came off statins as they were degrading my muscles, and I need them for exercise! So I'm taking Benecol drink and a clove of garlic each day - we'll see how that goes. However, as I've just started a low-carb...

    Newbie

Re: Newbie Hi Andy Welcome. I'm sure you've seen the advice to the other newbie K1ltman. As for exercise, did you watch that BBC Horizon program by Michael Mosely? If not it's well worth a watch, its available on I-player. The simple message was to build as much low level exercise as...

    Newbie

K1ltman there are lots of ideas on here and I do feel for you about being faced with a diet change. I love bread and pasta but I now realise, however good I was in cutting out biscuits and desserts, they have been killing me. I've been going low carb for only a few days but it hasn't been too...

    Newbie

K1ltman, contrary to what was said above. Weight loss is massively important and has been shown to be capable of reversing T2 diabetes. This has been documented elsewhere on this site. My memory of the evidence was that weight losses of 20kgs have been shown to reverse T2 diabetes in 40% of...

Help! I don't want to medicate.

Hi Vicky, toomanyairmiles I'm trying to avoid medicating because I believe I should be able to get to a situation where I can live without it for as long as possible. Today I got down to 80g of carbs 25g for a small porridge & semi skimmed milk 0g boiled egg 20g lunch (yesterdays left over stew...

Help! I don't want to medicate.

I'm sure the red wine was just an amusingly accidental juxtaposition of phrases deliberately misinterpreted by me. I do drink red wine but not every day and definitely not for breakfast. I shall attempt to limit myself to one glass in future. I also hear that it is good for slowing down the...

Help! I don't want to medicate.

Spendercat, I'm intrigued by the glass of red wine for breakfast  I'll give it a go. That doesn't look like a days worth of food though. I think I might fade away on that. My numbers do seem to follow my weight though and although I'm already described as slim by my peers I reckon I...

Help! I don't want to medicate.

Thanks for all the advice. Well at the end of my first day carb counting I reckon I've had about 90g. 30g for porridge breakfast 20g sml tin pilchards in tomato sauce with handful of cooked bulgar wheat for lunch 10g for a dried fig & spoon of greek yoghurt 20g for beef with chickpeas, tomatoes...

Help! I don't want to medicate.

Carol, you're right, I'm probably stuck in a breakfast cereal mindset. However, what do people do to get fibre into a low-carb diet? I currently rely on cereals and dried figs. Figs especially, but now I'm going to have to cut these out as they are about 8g of carb a pop.

Help! I don't want to medicate.

Thanks Sketcher, I'm also having to keep my cholesterol under control. Its up to 6.7, but the ratios are good, so I don't want to snack on anything that will raise it. I came off statins because I got muscle degradation which was stopping me from exercising and thus not helping my diabetes...

Help! I don't want to medicate.

Thanks Toots, The whole carbs thing has been confusing as I was always told (and read on NHS websites) that my meals should be based around carbs, but now it seems that carbs are the enemy. I have started carb counting today but I really don't know what I should be aiming for. I had planned to...

Help! I don't want to medicate.

Help! I’m very confused. After years of telling me I’m managing my diabetes well, there has been a change of staff at the diabetes clinic and all of a sudden they want to medicate me. I must say the old regime was pretty hands off, never calling me in unless I asked and not offering a HBA1c...
