    diabetes and memory loss

Since being diagnosed I too feel that my memory fails me. I have a feeling that my low carbing is also (at least) partially responsible and recently I noticed that when trying to read on an emptyish stomach, I was misreading/pronunciating words quite frequently. Other times, like when I'm...

    Bitter Melon/Momordica charantia/Kugua/Goya in dishes

Re: Momordica I experimented with the vegetable and posted my experiences about them here: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=16167 I did find that they lowered my bs levels somewhat and did use them whilst taking met, I used them like a food supplement not in any processed tablet form. But ask your doc...

    Creatinine

Hiya I'm type 2 The 'acceptable' range according to labs my GP uses is 80 - 115. Creatinine (I think) is apparently some waste product that should be getting cleared from your blood via the kidneys. If you kidneys start to deteriorate, then they do the job of getting rid of it poorly and you...

STATIN USERS - QUESTIONS and ANSWERS

Simvastatin making me forgetful? I swear simvastatin is making me forgetful and absent minded? What alternatives do I have? Anyone?

    Alcohol v. Diabetes

Well, I'm experimenting with 'no alcohol' for the first time since a teenager. I must say in the early days (post diagnosis), a shot or two on a evening did help lower my fasting levels to ones I struggled to obtain. Something has happened since though and I often get these lower levels without...

    Odd one

It certainly seems to be carb related? I actually noticed it in the run up to diagnosis after I'd eat.

    Diabetes and Coffee

Someone told me to be wary of coffee and tea as a diabetic because it puts the kidneys through the motions trying to clear it, and that kidneys are compromised when you have diabetes and need to be treated with care. Anyone else heard this or it 'old wives tales'? PS - No offense intended to...

what should blood sugar be at night?

Just to throw this in the mix: I asked my GP about hypos and she told me that I needed to worry when I get around the 3.0 mark. This seems quite low compared to accepted wisdom?

Should you - if you can get away with it?

Thanks guys. guess I have to get tight with my discipline again. I got an inch and went for the whole nine yards. The slip off the path wasn't by any means abrupt, but rather slow and subtle. Okay, must psych myself up to get back to my former state. Arrgghh! lol

Should you - if you can get away with it?

Okay, been T2 a while, went super monk mode at beginning, and got levels under reasonable control. Tested like hell and experimented with diet early on. Avoided almost all cabs like plague and had nothing sweet. Fast forward 6 months I found my super sensitive non tolerance of sweets/carbs...

    Odd one

I know it's an odd question but I guess the only way to deal with it is to come straight out with it. Does any other T2 hear and (slightly) feel a subtle churning sound coming from the about the same area I suspect the pancreas is, after eating carbs? When I have more carbs than normal (even...

Has anybody tried seed bars at all? What was the result?

I experimented with some 'fingers' of sesame seeds and hazelnuts in honey bars you get in Sainsburys. They're cheap, like 49p and don't seem to have much effect on my blood sugar level.

How old were you at diagnosis?

Re: How were you at diagnosis? Was 37. On reflection I had warning signs a while before diagnosis. Sadly no one told me what I should be watching out for (numb hands, thirst and deteriorating eyesight etc.). Family has strong history of condition. In any case male machismo had me ignoring...

    Diabetes and fever

Hi folks! Am laying around with a slight fever. It's the first time I've been ill post diagnosis. Just wondering about any general advice from some of you veterans out there. How do you best deal with flus, colds, fevers etc with the condition? Are there any extra dangers we need to be...

    Help with meter readings please.

Try this for a healthy breakfast that resembles cereal in taste. Get some ground flaxseed, sesame seeds (I prefer the toasted ones), pumpkin seeds and crush a bar of Happy Valley granola bar putting all this in a bowl. Add a heaped teaspoon full of cinnamon and finally some cold full fat milk...

    Replacing carbs with fat...

On a related note I've noticed some credible looking research suggesting that Chinese people are able to ingest a comparatively higher level of fat in their diet without the associated complications by simultaneously taking green tea. A similar thing is claimed with the French and red wine. What...

What's the longest someone here has been on statins?

I suspect I have a genetic disposition to hypercholesterolemia myself. My brother's level was elevated too and he is of slim build. If I'm right my levels may be off the scale when I next get checked.....

What's the longest someone here has been on statins?

Hiya Thanks for the response. I just don't get it? Don't they (statins) lower your levels after a few months? Why would you need to take them continuously? Surely you can have a break inbetween the period of having lowered your lipid levels and the time they take to go back up again...

What's the longest someone here has been on statins?

Question popped into my head: What's the longest someone here has been on statins? Do we normally only take them for a period or indefinitely?
