What dose of Insulin are you on ?

Hi Eliminator, You're using 76 units of insulin per day? For a type 1, that's a big dose. I'm not going to pretend I'm a good example of anything very much, but for comparison's sake, I use Humulin, Humalog and Levemir. My doses are as follows: Breakfast - 3 units Lunch - 2 to 3 units Dinner -...

    BS not moving

You've made huge strides in a very short time Allan, great stuff. Mind you, your health problems took years to get established, you can't expect to reset the clock after only a few days. The improvements you've found will continue while you keep at it, maybe not at the same spectacular rate, but...

    Mary C Vernon MD

Fair enough, Sid. If understanding insulin resistance, what insulin does, what raises blood sugar, how diet effects it, how to minimise medication, improve weight control and balance the metabolism isn't your cup of tea, good luck to you. All the best, fergus

Why Does BS Go UP Before Bed

Hi GLF, type 1 cavalry here at last! A few possibilities occured to me. First, the timing of basal dose splits may be responsible for your late evening bg surge. While I don't think there's any absolute necessity to split the dose by 12 hours ( Lantus' activity profile makes it quite slow...

    NEJM

Thank you, pheonix :?: Two things come to mind with this. Firstly, I think it's reasonably certain that exogenous basal insulin would benefit a great many type 2 diabetics who otherwise might struggle to maintain safe blood sugars. The hypoglycemic effect, combined with the lessened demand for...

    NEJM

The New England Journal of Medicine publishes these papers, some free, some on subscription, and the abstracts are tantalising sometimes. I'm not going to pay for it 'cos I'm a stingy Scot and a T1. Mind you, even if I was a T2 with money to burn, I don't know if I'd be rushing to spend it on...

    carb counting

Hi muppet65, welcome aboard. Saz1is a great example of what can be done in next to no time if you give the starches and sugars the heave-ho. It's a very quick and very effective method if you think it would suit you. Eliminate all biscuits, bread, cereals, flour, wheat, potatoes, rice and root...

LOW CARB DIET - A NEWBIES GUIDE

Sorry I missed your post, crackit. Y'know, I despair at the way some of these dieticians seem more determined to maintain foolish prejudices than provide useful information. They seem to deal in superstition more than evidence sometimes. Is there any evidence that a low carb diet is bad for you...

Hi lottie, Delighted you could join us and bring some Italian sophistication! In return, I hope we can help you get that HbA1c down to a better place. Take a look around and see what you think. ciao bella!

    i keep injecting too much

Hi gerardvdk, Well, thanks to all who have posted already, there's little left to say. There are no certainties in life other than death and taxes, but an HbA1c of 13% will qualify you for a whole lot more. Everyone here knows what they are and I think you do too. I think everyone has been very...

    DESMOND debarcle

Dear God, what a depressing story! It does sound as if the whole point is to dumb down instead of inform. Couldn't have taught them anything Helen? Seriously though, any diabetic depending on this sort of programme to help them get proper control is going to be so badly let down...

    Triglyceride levels

That is a bit high, SweetEnough. 0.8-2.1 is thought to be the safest range. Statins won't do anything to lower triglycerides however, their only impact is on LDL levels. The biggest influences on triglyceride levels are carbohydrate intake and alcohol. All the best, fergus

Greetings from a fairly recent Diabetic

Hi Darren, Welcome to the forum first of all. Cutting down on the carbs is the way ahead if you want to avoid increased medications. There are a lot of good recipe ideas here: http://www.diabetes.co.uk/diabetes-forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2856 Don't worry, there is a wide variety of fantastic...

What is a healthy fasting insulin level for a non diabetic?

Hi pavlosn, It has actually been possible to measure serum insulin levels for quite some time now. Insulin is a very small protein so there were dificulties in developing the technique, but it was eventually figured out by two American scientists, Rosalyn Yalow and Solomon Berson in 1960. Now...

    Dietary control ONLY

Hi GeordieBoi, That's a very good point. In fact, the British National Formulary actually states that type 2 diabetics should be asked to use diet ( calorie and carbohydrate restriction) and exercise for 3 months post diagnosis before being prescribed oral meds. Even then, the meds are...

    new type1

Hi there, You've had some excellent advice already, so I won't over do it. You are new to this, so don't worry unduly. It will begin to make sense before too long. In general terms, test your blood sugar regularly until you begin to get a picture of the foods that raise your levels too high...

Had my say in the parliamentary committee

Great work Hana! :D Always a good time to make sure our MP's know what's bothering us, with an election on the horizon. Spare a thought for all those homeless ducks should they be denied expense account subsidised housing they deserve. fergus

What are people's BG levels before bed?

    View on low carbing.(part two)

Not really Patch. Insulins are by and large ph neutral, somewhere from 7 to 7.8 I think. The reference was really made regarding the effect of elevated insulin on the endocrine system, on fat metabolism, vasculature and organ function. All the best, fergus
