BS not moving

I have managed to lower my BS from 16.72 to 7.6 during these past 20 days, however they seem to be at a standstill.
I haven`t changed my low carb diet, exercise or meds but the numbers have been roughly the same for the past week when testing on a morning.
I began testing after meals to see which foods affected me, but, now I have a better idea( from testing and from this brilliant forum), I don`t feel the need to test as much unless I add something new to my diet.
I know this is early days but would like to get them down to as near normal as possible.
Is it a case of trying to run before walking??

Hi allan.

In my view you have done very well to get the numbers down the way you have in such a short time.
I am sure if you persevere then those numbers will drop further. It might help to change what you do, maybe a little more exercise ? Types of foods that you eat to get the levels down. Time will tell.

As for testing, I wouldn't stop just yet. It is very early to think that everything is all OK. The post meal readings in particular are very important, just because they were low one day doesn't mean they will be the same every time ?

Your fasting number (7.6) is still high and you need to see why that is. Take a reading immediately before bedtime then compare with your fasting level first thing in the morning. What are your pre-meal readings, 1hr and 2 hr post meal readings.

I've been doing this for twelve years and I still test regularly. Around 6 - 7 times daily, mind you, I am on a hypo inducing drug. Recently started a new drug (non diabetes) which is playing havoc with my Bg readings though.

Hi Cugila,

My exercise regime, usually, is 1/2 hour brisk walk and 1/2 hr on the static bicycle, managing about 5 miles a day. I can increase this because my BP after exercise is usually 120/70. Lets see if getting out of breath helps.
My highest pre/post numbers were 6.7 and 11.1, that was after white rice. Bread, chickpeas and potatoes the same but not too dramatic.
Shall test before sleep and see the results.
I keep a spreadsheet and diary of the foods that affect me but I do not want to become obsessed with what I eat.

Allan,
It's not just what you eat, but portion size has an impact too.
It might be interesting for you to play about with portions.
you have done well to get down so much so quickly

You've made huge strides in a very short time Allan, great stuff.
Mind you, your health problems took years to get established, you can't expect to reset the clock after only a few days. The improvements you've found will continue while you keep at it, maybe not at the same spectacular rate, but they'll continue nontheless.
Keep it up, you know it makes sense!

All the best,

fergus

Hana and Fergus,

Thanks for the encouragement, it does help I can assure you.

For 25 yrs I was a UK Firefighter, working shifts, missed meals, bad food, lack of sleep, stress etc so I suppose that all this has in someway contributed to my problem.
I am greatfull that I was physically fit when I retired, ok that was 8 years ago and the easy paced life here in Crete has not helped.
Since being diagnosed I have changed my eating habits from 2 large meals a day, plenty of alcohol to 5/6 small portions a day of `good` food. I am now finding that I am never hungry and I am overfaced with a large platefull.
As we say here `siga siga `.....slowly slowly.

Strange...
Last night tested before sleep 7.1 this morning 6.6

No difference in the foods I ate but increased the level of my exercise , so for me anyway, this maybe the way forward.

Exercie may not drop the BG immediately, but it tends to have a longer time effect, so that a good workout will keep you low for the rest of the day.
Yousay you walk. that's my preferred exercise too. I usually do nearer an hour, just over generally and up hills too. that keeps my numbers down.
You say you've gone to 5 -6 meals. that's a good move.
I imagine that on Crete, you have a wonderful selection of salads and veggies as well as fruit.
Remember fruit is sweet, because it contains sugar.
Seeing that it's around grape harvest time, be careful with grapes they are about 16% sugar :(

Hi Allan.

Are you testing on waking, before any exercise and before any shower ?

cugila,

Yes I test whilst the kettle is boiling for my first coffee fix. :D :D

Out of interest, tested 3 hrs after lunch today and the reading was 6.05.

Lunch was Feta, 1/4 tomato, cucumber, lettuce, onion and drizzle of olive oil. (A typical Greek salad)

I exercise before lunch and before dinner.

Thank you Allan. I thought you might have been testing afterwards. Thanks for clearing that up.

Sounds a great salad......drool . :D
