Do we expect too much from our GPs ?

That's the case with many courses thesedays. Even a university like Sheffield requires 3 As to study a subject like history. The government has managed, very effectively, to get people to borrow large amounts of money to keep themselves off the unemployment register.

Do we expect too much from our GPs ?

"I will apply, for the benefit of the sick, all measures which are required, avoiding those twin traps of overtreatment and therapeutic nihilism. I will remember that there is art to medicine as well as science, and that warmth, sympathy, and understanding may outweigh the surgeon's knife or...

    Background retinopathy = terrified :(

I had one small bleed on my photo and the opthalmologist told me that it was nothing and would probably be reabsorbed but I would get a letter from the agency who studied the photos telling me that there had been background changes and that I would be required to go for another appointment next...

I have several Hairy biker's books and have adapted their recipes for type 2. A very good book is their Book of Curries and I just got their Asian Adventure These two and their two Hairy Dieters books are very cheap at WH Smiths and I have made meals from all of them. It's just meat, fish or...

Why does LCHF feel like another term for axe murderer?

It's a carving axe, for making wooden spoons, it's what Wille Sundquist does: Here's a photo of him at the Beamish museum: It's on the spoon carving website. All I ever managed though was to make chopsticks.

Why does LCHF feel like another term for axe murderer?

I have a Gränsfor Bruks Large Carving Axe with hand carved handle and Sunquist's book of Swedish Axe Carving Techniques. Hand forged, razor sharp and perfectly balanced, it takes some beating.

Anonymous Question Black toe - could I be diabetic?

Could be anything, from infection to poor circulation but it does need seeing to because something is causing it. If there is no sensation, you may have banged it unknowingly and it may be a bruise but the fact that there was no sensation should be enough for you to go and ask a GP.

    Healthy Pancakes?

It depends on how high your BG levels are but for me, wholemeal flour is OK but, it has to be 100% wholemeal and a lot of it is actually mixed with white flour. Although I haven't tried it for pankcakes, wholewheat durum flour, semolina, is low GI. It is much more coarsely milled than baking...

How to interpret blood sugar readings?

Your figures are slightly better than mine were when I was first diagnosed last year. It does take time for them to start coming down. As you eat less carbs, your body produces its own glucose via a process called gluconeogenesis so even if you don't eat any, it will still show up in your...

    Butter is Best

Butter, "the most delicate of food among barbarous nations" (Pliny, Natural Histories) The romans made little butter and generally used it for the treatment of wounds.

    Telling the truth

LCHF is such a lousy term. The 'High Fat' element is bound alarm HCPs. More accurately, it is low carb and high protein and it is somewhat kinder than the Zero Carb and Protein Only diets of the 1970s and 80s. LCHF is essentially an Atkins diet modified for type 2 diabetics. The main problem...

Stuff... What am I entitled too...

You have to ask your GP or DN and I'm afraid it is a bit of a lottery. They can't even agree with each other what diets people should follow and the whole thing is a disjointed mess. Don't waste time getting frustrated with them. Just ask and if they say no, ask a couple of weeks later. In the...

Interesting aspect ... Beta cells and postprandial levels

Ouch :-) I used to but when things settle down, readings start to get predictable. Frequent testing is, in my opinion, necessary at the beginning to find out what is going on and what effects foods have on you but, those poor poor fingertips.

Interesting aspect ... Beta cells and postprandial levels

That shows the importance of the HBA1c test which is often higher than finger prick tests would suggest. Many people are surprised by their hba1c results. They think that they 'have been good' but are disappointed by their result. This example of continuous glucose monitoring shows why:

Why does LCHF feel like another term for axe murderer?

I found this with certain foods too. It took me two or three months before I could eat porridge without getting a spike.
