How old were you at diagnosis?

Re: How were you at diagnosis? I was 62 years old, no symptoms, felt fine but it was picked up in a routine blood test so had the glucose intollerance one and it showed me to have high blood sugar and then another fasting blood test nailed it

    One piece of advice

Hello Jen , it can be done :D I was diagnosed about 15 months ago and also had high BP and high cholesterol but my Doc allowed me to try diet and exercise for a 3 month trial period . I was already on Beta Blockers for the BP and statins for the cholesterol so I didnt want to add to these...

What's the longest someone here has been on statins?

I`m in for the long haul too as I have Familial Hypercholesterolemia, which put simply means that if I dont take them , despite not eating much fat, my levels go into the 10`s , 11`s and even higher . Its just that my body doesnt cope with excess cholesterol , thats all and luckily I dont have...

Re: How Much have we gained and what we going to do about it I had three days off regime and put three pounds on  Climbed back on the wagon on Monday and have lost one pound this week so far . I did enjoy tucking into naughty food but have to be honest, it didnt suit my system at all .

    1st Christmas as a Diabetic

I was quite naughty , but not really bad  I had one roastie, loads of home made stuffing and a piece of tarte citron with clotted cream for pudding, then a small piece of pork pie for supper, oh joy, it was lovely :D I decided not to test, didnt want the guilt trip , but I have to say...

    Worried Partner

I am so sorry to read about your wife , what a worry for you and yes, it can be a minefield ! If her BG level was around 30, then it was very high indeed and no wonder she was poorly . The first thing she needs to address is medication and diet , does she take any meds at all and is her diabetes...

    Hello and still in shock.....

Hello and welcome from me too , really sound advice given . Its a sad and sorry state of affairs, but often true that we have to glean information from the internet rather than our medics , but ask away please and dont lose heart .

Has anyone tried making chips with sweet potatoe?

You can also make oven chips from celeriac , they are lovely and even lower GI , I guess that means you can have a few more !

    New and feel isolated

Hello there , please be assurred that most of us felt exactly the same as you are doing right now , I was scared to death and confused by conflicting advice re diet etc . For me, adopting a lower carb regime has made a huge difference plus extra exercise by way of walking about 3 miles per day ...

Will I always be a diabetic?

Cliff , I`m in a similar situation to you . Type 2 runs in the maternal side of my family, Mum and Gran had it and were not overweight . I was diagnosed last year and yes , I admit that I was overweight , I ate healthily, but too much ! I told the nurse that I wanted to try diet and exercise...

Confused about the 'low carb' issue

Hi , I`ve been on low carb regime for nine months . I`m Type 2 and on diet and exercise , my nurse doubted that I would make a difference , she had wanted me on meds from day one but I wanted a chance to go it alone . Please dont take this as slur on meds for diabetes , its just that I already...

    diet advice

Hi Matt, sounds like your friend needs help badly as being obese and not exercising is bound to make his diabetes worse . I follow a low carb regime and also walk an awful lot, usually 2/3 miles per day . I dont do gym type exercises because we dont live anywhere near a gym but find that walking...

Newbie intro and a little story :)

Hi Jaykay , funny you should say that about the bread not affecting you . I`ve been on the low car regime for 9 months now and , like yourself, had considered my previous diet to be pretty healthy, but for me, the wrong food altogether . I usually eat no more than 40/50 gr of carbs per day but a...

The longstanding issue of testing and NHS

I`ll certainly give it a try Sue as I have obtained good controll without any meds , got my HbA1c to 5.7 from initial 8.something only 9 months ago . So far I`ve been helped enormously by forum members with test strips , I`m on a pension , tight budget and simply cant afford them and yet its...

    KFC

if I ate a KFC meal , I`d be in real trouble , I dread to think what my BG would be !! The chicken is good but the coating is fatty and carby, the veg is, for me anyway, indigestable and the chips are taboo !

    Am i Diabetic?

Hi , I dont think anyone can diagnose you but, as its a year since you were tested , I would advise you to see your Doctor again and ask their advice as it could be a number of other things besides diabetes , such as thyroid problems , good luck

annoyed and upset (not diabetic related)

Re: anoyed and upset (not diabetic related) I`d still go on holiday Carl and risk it but then I`m biased because I live in Cornwall ! I know this might sound stupid but is there any way you could patch over it as a temp. measure ? I know it wont look very nice but it may offer some protection ...
