Hi all. I have posted on a couple of topics but never done this bit, so I thought I would today. Diagnosed in June after a run of Thrush that would not quit. Am on a 3 month diet only test after which I will have the H thingy blood test and they will then decide about meds. Have shifted 20kgs with low carb diet and fairly intense workout every other day. I loved my carb full/low fat diet but now only miss things very occasionally. Amazing how quickly us humans can adjust! :) My father had late onset diabetes, my half brother was hypoglaecemic and I have native American blood through my grandmother so I perhaps should have paid more attention to my diet earlier on. So that's me!

Now my little story: My friend was diagnosed as T2 about 6 months ago. On walking in to see the diabetic specialist GP, he said to her ( without looking up at her at all )"Okay, so the first thing you need to do is lose weight!" He then did take a look at his patient, who is a very tiny size 6!:b My friend, once she had recovered from her surprise, tore him off a strip good and proper! :)

I would be nice if each one of us were treated as individuals instead of constantly being put into "pigeon holes" Diabetic? must be obese, lazy, eat junk. It is hard enough fighting this desease without having to battle stereo-types as well.

I have been losing weight recently with Slimming World, and always dismissed people that told me that eventually I wouldnt miss the carbs, but it is so true.

I ate some bread last night as a treat, and not only do I feel awful this morning, fighting high BG, but it wasnt evenas nice as I remember it!

Welcome to our group, these people have turned my life around.

Exactly Amanda! Drives you nuts doesn't it? As a trained body therapist, I know I was taught to look at everyone on an individual basis. Don't see why GP's can't take this simple step.
I have always eaten 'healthily', just too much and the wrong things for my body...apparently. My husband says that a lot of the stuff I tell him about my new 'diet' is counter-intuitive but of course if it works then it can't be wrong.
Congrats on the weight loss! It's a good feeling to have some control over your body as much as anything else.
Oh, and btw, I started off cutting the obvious carbs right out ( bread, pasta, rice ) , especially after trying some low g.i. bread which shot my level right up but the other day I treated myself to a smoked salmon and tomato and mozzarella salad with a slice of granary bread and my level was 6.2...the lowest it's been since I started testing! Don't know whether it's me adjusting a bit or the combination of foods on the plate but it was a nice surprise! :)

Hi Jaykay , funny you should say that about the bread not affecting you . I`ve been on the low car regime for 9 months now and , like yourself, had considered my previous diet to be pretty healthy, but for me, the wrong food altogether . I usually eat no more than 40/50 gr of carbs per day but a couple of days ago , i ate a very small helping of wholewheat pasta and my two hour post meal test showed just 5.9 , so maybe our bodies do adjust and as we get tight controll , we can have the odd little carby helping of food, nice thought !
