Newly diagnosed - what should I expect (NHS)?

As a general rule have enough proteins and fats to keep you feeling full and keep the carbs down. A daily total of 150gm carbs is a good target to start with and this can be reduced if you still have excess weight or poor BS control.

Most meter manufacturers will send you a free meter as they want you to buy their strips. Ask your surgery what their preferred meter is as they may then prescribe the strips for it as my surgery. You don't need to use the hospital meter unless there is something pecial about it

    Type 1 about insulin

Hi and welcome. I expect you will receive many replies. Normally short-acting insulins such as Novorapid are given before the meal to allow time for it to work ready for the food. There is no fixed rule but I will inject perhaps 15 minutes before the meal. It is likely after a while that your...

Do I need to phone 111

Hi. Are you currently having a low-carb diet and seriously restricting the carbs until you've been able to see a medic?

    New diagnosed

Standard Metformin is well-known for bowel upset but the Extended Release version is normally OK so you are unlucky. Most problems will clear up after 2-3 weeks but for a few they may have to stop taking it

    Newbie here.

If your background insulin is Levemir, many of us split it into two for morning and evening injection. It provides more flexibility and trial and error will guide you on the split. It seems like your nurse is being too careful. I suggest being a tad more assertive and saying you really don't...

    Confused by dietary advice

Hi. If you research on Google the 'fact's' behind Sat Fat causing arterial blockage you will find that the original research data was manipulated and when it was looked at again by others it did not show any issue. You will find little to support what the NHS and others say about fat. Health...

Diabetic diet for weight gain ?

Hi. It sounds like she should be on the Basal/Bolus insulin regime with two different insulins. As a minimum it could be twice-a-day mixed insulin. Having lots of carbs to increase weight is usually the wrong approach as there may not be enough insulin to deal with those carbs with resulting...

    Type 2 relatively newly diagnosed

Hi. First if you do have baked beans have the reduced sugar variety. If you continue to lose weight despite eating well i.e. proteins, fats etc rather than carbs then it's always possible you could be Late onset T1 (LADA). If so your meds would need to changed. See how you go.

    Lost bit too much weight

Hi Never take more carbs to match the Gliclazide or whatever. Always match the meds to the carb level you choose to eat and not vice versa. If you don't you will be taking more medication than you really need and you may gain weight from the carbs. If you wish to gain weight go for more proteins...

Libre & Insulin requirements on holiday

Hi. I've travelled abroad a lot with my Libre, insulin etc. I've not found any climate effect but as you suggest you may well eat and drink more. Try to focus on proteins & fats rather than the carbs. I find my Libre sticks like glue so have not found any tendency to fall off due to swimming...

NHS Preventing Type 2 Diabetes service

Don't under-estimate the influence of the food industry lobby which was the main cause of the Eat Well Plate nonsense. The research done for that was funded mainly by the food industry who make most of their profits from Carbs. You will see carbs rarely mentioned by the NHS or the Celebrities...

    Type 1 or Type 2?

Mis-diagnosis is a problem and the definition of T1 is even more of a problem. The assumption that 'T1' (i.e. lack of insulin) is only caused by auto-immunity is wrong as the beta cells can be attacked by viruses and that's not 'auto-immunity'. This confusion causes the Drs/Nurses to place you...

    Recently diagnosed with type2 in December 2023 with a HBA1C of 98mmol/mol

Were the problems with plain Metformin rather than Metformin SR (Slow Release) which is much kinder?

    Newly diagnosed and struggling

Hi. I would challenge the medics when they say you need to eat carbs with every meal to make the insulin work; it sounds like dated advice. Insulin doesn't need carbs to work but the insulin dose needs to be matched as far as possible to the carbs you take. If you are on twice a day mixed...

    NHS artificial pancreas roll out.

Yes, I was looking for the new news and there wasn't any. I was offered a pump 2 years ago but chose not to at that time as the hassle factor outweighed it's advantages for me. Mind you with an HBA1C currently of 67 mmol despite low-carbing, slim and low insulin resistance and endless correction...

Started insulin, gained weight. Help please.

I'm sorry but I have to disagree as I posted earlier. Insulin is a hormone and cannot in itself cause weight gain. Weight gain is almost certainly due to having a carb intake too high for your metabolism and metabolisms vary greatly between people. If anyone knows of any scientific references to...

    Flying with t1 diabetes

Hi. Security have never cared when I've been thru many times. Just carry a letter from the GP or nurse and of course a copy of your prescription.

    Could it be diabetes?

Nausea and vomiting are not common symptoms for diabetes.

Diabetic diet for weight gain ?

Not as such. Most weight gain is caused by the carbohydrates in the diet. These need to be kept under control for avoid weight gain and BS rise. Typical advice is to keep total carbs down to below 130gm/day. The NHS hospital food will be high in carbs. Increasing insulin to control BS may (or...
