There is a knack to using BG meter test strips. Unfortunately, it can vary between different BG meters.
For the Tee2+ which I have, you must gently allow the strip to 'suck up' the blood near vertically rather than get a big drop and plunge it into that.
Have you looked online for a video about how it works with your particular BG meter?

I'd also look up what the error code for your specific glucometer means, which should give you some idea what the problem is and how to troubleshoot it. Check the instruction manual if you had one with the machine, or look it up online.

As a newly diagnosed T1 , I’m assuming late onset, are you not prescribed a continuous glucose monitor?

As for your error messages on your glucose machine, I would take it to the pharmacy that dispensed it and check you didn’t get a faulty one. Yes there is a knack as @ianf0ster states.

Just in case, are you putting the blood at the correct spot on your teststrip?
It doesn't go on top of the strip but you need to hold the edge of the strip to the drop of blood.

Most meter manufacturers will send you a free meter as they want you to buy their strips. Ask your surgery what their preferred meter is as they may then prescribe the strips for it as my surgery. You don't need to use the hospital meter unless there is something pecial about it
