My husband blood test is high regardless of metformin, diet control and excercise

Don't expect immediate results. It can take up to 3 weeks for metformin to have the desired effect. It can also take a while to figure out the best diet and for exercise to help keep blood glucose down. Avoiding carbohydrate is a good starting point.

Confused as I’m high all week

Wait a while and see what happens. It could be temporary, but it could also be permanent. The honeymoon period eventually wears off. 18 units is not a lot basal for an adult male.

    MDI and CGM integration

Thought this was really interesting. The InPen now connects with Guardian CGM through a phone app. Read about it here. Apparently Novo is working along similar lines with their next reusable pen.

    Type 1 and metformin

Yes, I have used it and metformin may help reduce insulin requirement a bit. But it won't make much difference if lots of carbs are consumed. The easiest way to reduce insulin requirement and avoid weight gain is to cut out the carbs.

New to Blood Glucose Testing - Unexpected Result

When you can see a trend, you will have something to discuss. Be aware that there can be a fair amount of variability between readings that doesn't mean anything. The manufacturers specify 20%. Sometimes blood glucose drops after meals because too much insulin is produced. A so called reactive...

    What do you think?

The Hela bio watch is not a device for treating diabetes. It is essentially a health bracelet. Measures other stuff too. I guess it could help pick up diabetes in users, but not accurate enough for making treatment decisions. It is also sold through network marketing, which doesn't inspire...

    When to take Humalog.

Take it when you get the best results. If there is a lot of carb in the meal, I can take fast acting insulin an hour before I eat. Try different timing and use the one that works best.

Would they let me have a dexcom?

It is the same price. The old system will be discontinued.

Keep needing snacks to avoid low

Wow! Are you putting on weight? Sounds like reducing basal action at that time of day would help. I used to have episodes like that and never figured out the cause. Insulin must be coming from somewhere. Perhaps regenerating beta cells that haven't been destroyed yet? For me these episodes were...

    High Blood sugar

Is that number from your Libre or have you confirmed it with your meter?

    Blood test results

Cholesterol numbers don't mean much. The liver makes as much of it as you need.

Levels tend to rise towards bed time.

It is very easy. Just have half your normal dose in the evening and the other half when you wake up in the morning. The timing is not critical, as long as you get the full dose in 24 hours. Don't be surprised if levels during the rest of the day change a bit. Monitor with the Libre and make...

Levels tend to rise towards bed time.

Lantus doesn't last 24 hours. The period is dose dependant and smaller doses last for shorter periods. Dived 16 by your weight in Kgs to see what your dose is and compare with the the graph on the right. This graph is based a glucose clamp study, with the required glucose infusion rate on the...

Having a senior moment there ... A better question is: Have you tried changing needles?

    Broke my lantus pen! Twice..

Are the needles ok? Are you able to eject insulin with no needle attached?

no bolus insulin needed. is this a problem if blood glucose is normal

The main function of insulin is to push glucose into cells. If glucose can't get into cells, blood glucose goes up. So blood glucose is the best indicator of whether there is enough insulin action. Insulin is also used in protein synthesis, but the 14 units of Lantus every day would cover that...

Type 1 Ketones in type 1

We all produce small amounts of ketones, especially during the night. It is normal. No need for concern if they are below 3. Ketones become dangerous when the go over 10. DKA symptoms are also very clear - shortness of breath, heart palpitations, no energy.

    Dawn Phenomenon (yeah...again)

That eating more often reduces blood glucose could be caused by the incretin effect. Eating causes secretion of gut hormones that increase insulin production. Eating as often as produces the best results would seem to make the most sense.

    Lantus

No, Lantus can't be changed for meals. The dosage can be adjusted to give better blood glucose levels over the day, though. While some users only do this under guidance of a doctor, many people do it on their own. The 'other injectable' is probably an incretin drug. It is injected and is a...

What will happen if I do not take any insulin ? Recently been diagnosed with T1

You are still making your own insulin, but high blood glucose rapidly kills off remaining beta cells. So without insulin, expect to see blood glucose rise as residual beta cell function declines during coming weeks. Over a period of weeks ketones will also rise and you could go into...
