    It's happened: Burnout

I think everyone goes through burn out. Diabetes is 24/7/365 thing and it gets old very quickly. You'll get yourself back on track, don't feel bad about it, no one is perfect!

Diabetes Professional Care 2015 launching on November 11

I was at this today (and will be again tomorrow) I was also in Partha Kar's session. Judging by some of the other sessions he seems to be the exception and not the rule as far as patient involvement. One woman who commented in one session basically said patients need to know their place and...

    pump approved

As long as the cannula is working I don't see any reason why you couldn't just change the reservoir daily rather than the whole thing. I know medtronic expect you to change the whole lot but I think maybe £ comes into play a little as I believe people on accuchek change the cannula and...

What improvements can be made in diabetes care by nurses on a surgical ward?

I replied on the other thread but I'll cut n paste it here to! It all depends on your focus! You could talk about variable rate insulin infusions, tight gylcaemic control post op (risks of hypo, hyper glycaemia, effects on wound healing) the self management of people with diabetes pre and post...

    I HAVE diabetes. I'm not a diabetic.

It all depends on your focus! You could talk about variable rate insulin infusions, tight gylcaemic control post op (risks of hypo, hyper glycaemia, effects on wound healing) the self management of people with diabetes pre and post operatively, the effect of pre and post op fasting on blood...

    Swimming with pump

To be fair insulin is the last thing I need when I'm swimming! I have to reduce my basal so much before and start with a minimum BG of 10 and invariably I'll still go hypo, my pump is not waterproof so I have to remove it but if it was then I'd probably still remove it. Even being in the sea...

So, we should be ignoring NICE after all?

NICE guidelines are just that, GUIDELINES. There is no one shoe fits all with any disease or condition (would be a lot simpler all round there was) guidelines and recommendations will not fit everybody's needs and HCP (and patients) need to realise that although it can work in our favour when...

Midlands & East Anglia London Bridges Challenge 2015

They were only 17g per bar, much needed sustenance on the way round! Was a great day but my feet feel so sore and my legs are going to ache tomorrow,at least I'll sleep well tonight!

    Type 1 Mixtard 30 100u/1ml and syringes

I appreciate that, I'm a bit concerned that Bassiette's profile says he's a pharmacist and he couldn't work out wether to take "less or the same" though! u100 syringes are fairly universal

    Type 1 Mixtard 30 100u/1ml and syringes

Are you sure they are just not the small sized syringes? Still u100 but only 40 unit size? u100 insulin should ALWAYS be given in u100 syringe

    Changing from injection to pump

When I first went on the pump I was on split basal, I was told to take my evening dose and omit the morning dose. If you run too high or low then you could just use a temporary basal until it resolves. Levemir gets out the system pretty quickly, lantus not so much!

Approved Help out a Trainee Pharmacist?

I was diagnosed as T1 11 years ago and originally on the traditional lantus and novorapid concoction however due my my job (nurse working shifts) I found the Lantus too inflexible as I couldn't alter it effectively for my shift patterns, any change take a few days to take effect. Due to this...

    Type 1 Pain killers!!

unless you already have kidney problems then ibuprofen is unlikely to be an issue There are no painkillers that need to be avoided, all the over the counter ones are fine however if you need them regularly then it's probably best to try and resolve the issue rather than just treat for it...

Injecting without testing....should I be worried by this....

to be fair to him, if he's on fixed doses then testing before injecting is not as useful as if he was carb counting on MDI. He injects the same amount no matter what, you cant really adjust fixed doses to what you eat (although you should perhaps eat to your fix doses) so testing is not going...

    Adjusting Social Settings

You are in charge of your diabetes, you mustn't let it control you. An occasional splurge is not going to adversely affect you if you are generally in control. Plus, it is, in most situations, easy enough to to make sensible choices whether it be to skip dessert or avoiding the carby main...
