    Diabetics are carb intolerant

I would only need to treat if I took on too much insulin. What would happen if you over treated ? You would have a hyper because you are intolerent of carbs lol ! I have a great deal of respect for your views Brett but I think we are getting nowhere here and must agree to disagree :-) Sent...

    Diabetics are carb intolerant

The discussion isn't about if we need insulin, it's whether we tolerate carbs. Tolerate means "no adverse affects". If we ate carbs, we would get elevated BG levels which is an adverse affect ? Sent from the Diabetes Forum App

    Diabetics are carb intolerant

Do you mean your BG levels would rise even if you never ate carbs ? Not sure what you mean, sorry. Sent from the Diabetes Forum App

    Diabetics are carb intolerant

So, if you stopped injecting insulin but kept eating carbs, what would happen ? Would your body tolerate them ? I refer you back to the definition : an inability to eat a food or take a drug without adverse effects. "young children with lactose intolerance" Sent from the Diabetes Forum App

Totto, we're besties :-) If you think I bit your head off, I'm not sure why ! I just responded to your post, not nastily or anything. I have a lot of respect for your opinions :-) Sent from the Diabetes Forum App

    Diabetics are carb intolerant

Intolerance means my body does not tolerate. If I eat carbs, I must inject insulin. If I was allergic to peanuts, I would take epinephrine. Call these conditions what you like but either way, my body doesn't tolerate carbs. Sent from the Diabetes Forum App

    Diabetics are carb intolerant

The only reason we get hypo's is because we don't control our meds properly. Diabetes does not cause hypo's, it causes the total opposite. You're a sharp guy and I know you certainly know about diabetes, far more than me. That's why I'm surprised of your take on this. Intolerance means not being...

But we do need treatment to counteract, insulin. Sent from the Diabetes Forum App

Should I push for a LADA diagnosis?

I guess we sort of agree to disagree. I totally understand that you want a definitive diagnosis but treatment and dietary advice won't change. As for GP's hearing of it, again, it won't change things. Many doctors now refer to patients as "insulin dependant" or "non insulin dependant" diabetics...

    tattoo

Tattoo's generally no problem but the foot may not be a great idea as us diabetics often struggle with feet and healing etc. It's your body but I would personally not get one on my foot. Good luck, whatever you decide :-)

    Ratio question

I think the average is 1 unit of insulin to 10g of carbs. That is what DAFNE teaches and work to. Obviously there will be differences but 1:10 is certainly a good starting point.

    Diabetics are carb intolerant

So are you saying someone with a peanut allergy is safe because their body will reject them ? If you were not on insulin, you would get uncontrolled, elevated BG levels after eating carbs. This means you have an intolerance to them unfortunately.

Should I push for a LADA diagnosis?

I sort of understand what you say but i can't see how dietary advice would differ between T1, LADA or T1.5. Lowering intake of carbs helps, whatever type you are. This will, or should be, the same advice for any form of diabetes. The only difference is if you go onto insulin, you may need to...

    Type 2 going on insulin

Hi Bev and welcome. Insulin needs a little work but once you've got your head around things, it's not so bad. The testing is vital in the beginning, so is recording of it. It gives more flexibility with food but try not to let it become an excuse for a poor diet. Good luck and please ask if you...

Should I push for a LADA diagnosis?

Exactly the reason why being labelled T1 is probably better. Ask any member of the public what LADA or T1.5 diabetes is and you will get a very blank stare. Even some doctors have never heard of these terms. I understand your frustration regarding correct diagnosis but to be brutally honest, who...

Should I push for a LADA diagnosis?

I wouldn't have thought attitude and support would be any different if you are called T1 or LADA. If a certain doc doesn't understand why you are not on insulin yet, surely that's their problem, not yours.

Should I push for a LADA diagnosis?

The treatment won't change whether you wish to be described as T1, LADA or T1.5. They are very much interchangeable terms. I would guess I am probably officially LADA as I was not diagnosed until I was mid 40's but my records show as T1. Doesn't bother me really. You were fortunate to at least...

    Hypo????

If 4.6 is a lot lower than you would normally see then you can experience all the symptoms of a hypo without actually being technically hypo. These are sometimes called "false hypo's", there are threads here on them or you can Google it.
