Hi I've been type 2 for 10 years. Controlled with metformin till last summer when blood test showed high readings. Put on 80 whatever of glicizade. Which really didn't do anything. Blood test in October tb1ac was 136 drs never changed anything.
Sugars been sky high since, haven't finger pricked for 7 years. Until I had pre opening assessment last week for a humane options.
Hb 1ac now 142, g o t phone call can't do operation blood too high.

Saw a new gp who was fab and said it would take ages to get sugars down to 64 which is the maximum for surgery. Why don't you try insulin, I agreed as I have no choice as the opportunity is for ablation and if I wait too long will nkeed hysterectomy.

So seeking DSN on Tuesday, who quadrupled glizerade to help reduce finger pricks 28 to about 19 so far. I had my first hyper on Friday it went from 18 pre lunch to 28 had hot sweats and mouth not working with brain. Very odd feeling.

Am hoping gp will only make me wait a month before 're-referring to surgeon. Don't fancy waiting for another Hb1ac in 3 months time.

I've chosen the 4 doses a day as I've lost 10 stone and don't really want to put it back on. I've forgotten the name of the insulin I'm it's the pen that comes in different colours lol.

Dreading injecting and got my older daughter to prick my finger the first time,, she's coming with me to see the nurse as I think she might have to do a couple of doses for me as I'm a chicken :)

Look forward to contributing to the forum.

Hi Bev and welcome. Insulin needs a little work but once you've got your head around things, it's not so bad. The testing is vital in the beginning, so is recording of it. It gives more flexibility with food but try not to let it become an excuse for a poor diet. Good luck and please ask if you need further advice :-)

Hi bev! Sorry to hear your news. Just wondering. Have you thought about LCHF. I weighed 16 stone 1lb and my bs was 13 fasting. Down to between 6-7 most mornings and 5-6 by mid morning. I have lost 2 stone 1lb since 28th of jan and have only lost couple of lbs in last few weeks so about 2 stone in 3 months. A possibility rather than going onto insulin? Very strict no sugar no rice, pasta, potatoes or bread. Good luck!

Thank you.
Scandichic I was looking at carbs on the bread isle in tesco and on everything else, I might try and reduce them but wouldn't be very good on very low carbs, it is scary how many carbs are in food tho. O

Thank you.

Have a look at www.dietdoctor.com it's written by a Swedish doc who specialises in obesity and diabetes. I used to love all the stuff I mentioned but then decided I'd got nothing else to lose by trying it. The hardest thing in the beginning is deciding what to have for brekkie and what to have instead of a sarnie at lunch. Brekkie now 2 sausage and 1
Patched egg. At first it felt too Mitch but now I'm used to it. You must do what's right for you and I don't want to preach but if people can get their head around you I promise it works! Why take insulin if you don't have to? Good luck! Xxxx

Compared with high bg and going on insulin, most of us prefer to turn our eating habits around to low carb. Scandichic and I both do LCHF as in Scandichics link to Dietdoctor in her post and it works beautifully. You may want to look into LCHF before you decide insulin is your choice.

You do have meter, don't you? So to be able to test when you feel you need to? As in before and after meals?

On the whole I have to agree with mo here except when it comes yo the insulin side of things if they put you on to a premixed insulin then you haven't got as much freedom with your diet

Type 2 diagnosed 24/01/2013.
Novomix 30, Victoza, Simvistatin.

I'm not sure if it's pre mixed. But it's insuman slow and fast acting insulin I've got sat in the fridge.
The increased glicizade seems to be working though. I've got a date for my operation of next Tuesday 27th but think pre op haven't told waiting list coordinator that it's not going ahead. I'll ring hospital to check tomorrow

Hi. It's very important to try to get any excess weight down before moving onto insulin (and keeping it there after). If you have excess weight you are normally insulin resistant and that means you probably have too much not too little insulin in your blood. Adding more thru shots is not ideal and often needs quite large doses. Removing insulin resistance makes it easier to determine how much, if any, insulin is still needed and the result is much better. Low-carbing I'm afraid is not a choice; it is essential if you are to reduce weight and blood sugar. Set yourself a daily limit of, say, 180gm and see how you go. Carbs are not essential to good health and in fact your body can flourish quite well with none as long as you have enough fats, proteins and veg which the body can use as a source of glucose
