What Is It With Statin Drugs And Doctors?

My cholesterol is fine but the last time I went to the doctors she told me that it is "standard practice" to offer statins to anyone who has diabetes. I politely declined and she noted it on my records I'm guessing from this that it is an edict from high up in the NHS

    should I stop taking metformin?

I'm coming up to 2 years since diagnosis, and have just reduced my metformin from 2 a day down to one a day. However, I only did that after discussing things with my GP and with her agreement (I'm also having 3 monthly HbA1c tests to make sure it hasn't affected me too much). I would echo what...

    BMI chart

My BMI is 20.4 which is well in the green zone. I'm very happy with my current weight and feel better than I have for years. As a comparison, when I was diagnosed 2 years ago, my BMI was 38 (my avatar shows before and after)

    How low is low carb?

When I was first diagnosed, I cut down to less than 20g a day (sometimes less than 10). This got my blood sugar under control and had the side effect of helping me lose a ton of weight (over 8 stones). I now eat more carbs because while low carbing was suiting my blood sugar, I couldn't stop...

    Metformin

I had side effects (dodgy tum) for about 2 weeks but have no issues at all now (standard, non-SR version)

    Any thoughts on this one...APPLES

I got super excited when I saw this, then I saw the recipe - I'm massively allergic to tree nuts so will have to pass on it :(

    Had it

It's probably more than that - a banana has 23g of carbs in a small one, a medium Apple has 20+ and then there's the chips, not to mention the peas (which have 18g per 100g)

    Any thoughts on this one...APPLES

I eat a small apple every day and it doesn't affect my blood sugar, but everyone is different and as others have said, the only way to know for sure is to test it yourself.

More bad press for Coca Cola, Pepsi and the other soda makers

46 gallons of soda On Average! is a huge amount of sugar (22kg by my calculations) so there's no wonder they've got issues over there!

    skin tags

Before I was diagnosed, I had skin tags on my eyelids. Since I've got my blood sugar under control, they disappeared on their own

How Many Calories Do You 'Think' You Eat A Day

I track everything I eat through MyFitnessPal and everything is weighed before it goes on my plate. When I was losing weight, I ate 1,500 calories a day and I now eat 2,400 per day which has maintained my weight at 66kg (with a 0.5kg variation each way) for the last 4 months so I'm happy it's...

what are your thoughts of diet coke and the like ?

I tend to drink mainly no added sugar squash with sparkling mineral water (the water out of the tap is vile), but do drink Pepsi max and other sugar free fuzzy drinks quite a lot too. I've never had any issues with them

    Can anyone tell me ...

It's an interesting question and one that no-one can have a definitive answer to (it depends on your personal preferences) Even non-diabetics can spike above 7.8 but only for a very short time and only with an extremely large number of carbs I've been using a freestyle libre for the last 5...

Type 2 Question about your diet for those with an HbA1c under 6%

I typically eat to 200-230g of carbs a day and my last HbA1c (a month or so ago) came in at 5.7%. I've adopted a grazing approach to eating, I.e little and often and it seems to work for me. I don't eat potatoes or root vegetables, but do eat apples, bananas, wholemeal bread, breakfast cereals...

Anyone stopped medication against Doc/nurses advice?

Personally, I'd never go against medical advice to the extent of not taking medication that is being prescribed as your health team need to know how you are reacting to your meds. If they think you are on certain meds but you're not taking them without letting them know then how are they...

    'Acceptable' BS whilst on holiday

Personally speaking, I keep the same target all the time (which is under 7.8 2 hours after eating as an absolute max) and don't allow myself any cheat days: the reason being I don't trust myself to get back on the wagon if I ever climb off it :)

    artificial sweetener

I have to agree with @ChrisSamsDad and @Daibell - I'd much rather have artificial sweeteners that don't affect my blood sugar than natural sugar, honey, etc that sends it into the stratosphere (and as a type 2 not on insulin, I can't compensate for it)

What is good sugar and bad sugar?

As others have said, the only way to know for sure is to test after eating some. Many people can't eat bananas for example, but they barely affect my blood sugar (as long as it's a small one and not overly ripe): if I wasn't testing, I wouldn't have known that

    Latest Hba1c Results Are In

Just got my latest HbA1C results and to say I'm pleased would be an understatement :) I was diagnosed in November 2014 with an HbA1C of 107. I was put on Metformin and immediately went on a very strict LCHF regime for 6 months and started to lose some serious weight and exercise far more than I...

    Diabetic medication

The prescription charge is a fixed amount for any medication and does not reflect the cost of the medication being dispensed but is, in effect, nothing more than a notional charge that helps fund the NHS. In some cases the cost of the medication will be lower and in some cases it will be much...
