    Frequency of testing

Every day is different. If blood sugars are stable I test 4-5 times a day but if they are not or my BG is too low to drive then I may end up testing 7-8 times a day. Sometimes it feels like you have to do an activity or drive around pre and post meal testing purely to save on strips. Type 1

    Hypo Treatment

Asda and Morrisons sell a mini packet of bassets jelly babies for about 30p. Each pack has 5/6 jelly babies in it and fit easily into your pocket or bag. No danger of eating the whole of a large bag and over treating the hypo.

    About DVLA

You can be fined £1000 for not informing the DVLA of your diabetes. As noblehead says, your insurance would be invalid in the event of an accident for not notifying both insurance company and DVLA.

Why do I never see people testing their blood or injecting?

On insulin since July 2014. Felt very nervous testing and injecting in public at first. More for not causing someone else to pass out or call the police because I was using drugs. I have got more used to it. I inject discreetly where possible at restaurants. It can cause some funny looks. A...

    What about gallstones?

Hi, You can do low carb and low fat diet but it is hard to keep to. It is easier to follow low carb and steer clear of the very high fat foods ie eat medium fat foods. I have to have a low fat diet because I have gallstone pancreatitis (still recovering from June 2014) and I also tend to low...

    Travel insurance

I have been asked to go to New York next October with a group of friends. I should have gone to Turkey in June of this year but I was in hospital 5 weeks with pancreatitis. This was to be my first holiday abroad. I had annual travel insurance and successfully claimed my money back. I had...

    Carrying Things Around!

I use a Kipling pouch. They may be expensive but it is substantial, doesn't rip or get grubby. It holds my testing kit, glucotabs, insulin, needles, safe clipper etc. Buy from QVC or Amazon. You could also use a small Kipling handbag as most of their shoulder straps are detachable and can be...

    No lifeguards at swimming pool

I have frozen my membership at the moment as My health and diabetes is unstable. The gym assured me that all staff are trained in CPR and the taking of blood sugars. At the moment I feel too vulnerable and value my life too much

    Hair Loss

Hi Anna I take statins. I went on insulin in July this year after acute severe pancreatitis. My hair started to fall out about a month ago. I put it down to serious illness. I was in hospital 5 weeks on virtually no nutrition. Hair is still falling out now . I take multivitamins . recommended by...

    DVLA timescales?

I sent forms to the DVLA to tell them I had gone on insulin July 20th. I am still waiting to hear. I did e-mail the end of August to enquire on time scales . They replied saying they were behind and waiting for information and would be in touch in due course. You can drive until they tell you...

    No lifeguards at swimming pool

How many lifeguards are required at each pool? Why does my local pool have no lifeguard supervision? Given the wide range of pool facilities and the ways pools are used, it is not possible to make specific recommendations for lifeguard numbers. Pool operators need to consider how many...

    No lifeguards at swimming pool

Thanks for your reply. Yes I think you are quite right. I would rather be safe. As for out door pools , they can give you something called Kryptos spyridium (not sure on spelling). it causes diarrhoea for some time and is reportable to environmental health.

    No lifeguards at swimming pool

That's what I had thought. Public baths are just more restrictive on swimming times and are often full of children. In the long run costs more than my monthly subscription to the health center.

    No lifeguards at swimming pool

Three months ago I was seriously ill and have now ended up on insulin. I always swam 2/3 times a week up to that point. I now wish to start swimming again but am a bit concerned as the gym/pool I go to {Nuffield Health} do not use lifeguards. When I enquired today about dilemma They said if you...

    Reliability of glucose monitors

The meters are as you say forge iffy. As it is all we have to determine how we can try to control our blood sugar levels, then it does become important. For driving , tweaking insulin doses, what foods are good and bad and how you feel. I have 2 jabs a day of mixed short and long acting insulin...

    Pancreatitis & diabetes

They say it is related to a gall stone as I don't drink alcohol, which is often the main cause.
